I'd be glad they weren't pushing for unnecessary treatment. I used to be registered with a practise in S London where the dentist was always replacing my fillings every visit. Never knew how this was needed, or experienced such a rate of dental work since.

I read somewhere later that this was a scam of sorts, and it's best to avoid dentists that do this much work on you as they're financially incentivised to drill and fill as often as possible. Or, specifically, temporary locum dentists were.

This was A Thing when the NHS first got going. Several members of my Dad's family had all their teeth removed and replaced with false teeth. It was a well known scam.

I remember a piece on Watchdog when I was a kid about a dentist that was accused of doing unnecessary treatment. In the end he got done for advertising as his car number plate was JAWS1.

There was a trend for people to get their teeth removed while the service was free. Then there was a a massive push to promote conservative dentistry, filling where possible and only extracting when absolutely necessary.

I can remember there were demonstrations on TV about he ideal way dentists would recommend you to brush teeth. I swear they recommended you brush vertically against the gumline, which now would be regarded as daft as it would lead to exposure of the root and potential need for root fillings.

That might explain why my mum's were all gone - and I believe it was from ~1946. However, I've seen photos of her during the War and they were in a shocking state, so hers was probably justified.

As a kid I'd watch Miss World with my Mum. It was amazing seeing how many had false teeth... less so the winners but certainly some contestants. They would also have, their back teeth removed to give them more defined cheekbones. It's surprising what's in the eye of the beholder.

My mum was once so proud of having all her own teeth...until she fell over a post in Italy and knocked a good few of them out! She said it might have been a consolation if she had been drunk at the time but she wasn't, dad had distracted her, someone moved a post in the mean time and over she went.

Sort of ruined the holiday losing her front teeth (and some near by), gashing her leg requiring oodles of stitches, breaking her glasses and nose and looking like she had done 10 rounds in a boxing ring.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.

My grandmother (born 1918) had all her teeth removed as a wedding present! She reckons it was quite common to have this as the thinking then was that in pregnancy hormones weakened your teeth!

Slovenia, Croatia, and about an hour in the one I'm working in for tomorrow (choice of 2, one you think is probably right), but about 600km to go.

Well, it sounds to me as if you definitely needed a coffee by the time you reached Graz! Hope you got to bed eventually

ETA Oh Sue, your poor Mum! Not exactly what you want to happen on holiday!

They had some funny ideas. There's a Hemingway novel where a woman is advised to take up smoking as it will result in a smaller baby and thus an easier and less risky birth!

In Scotland in the early 60's a girl I met at a youth club proudly showed me her fifteenth birthday present from her parents - a full set of false teeth!!!!

Since then I have been paranoid about keeping my own teeth and when I had children making sure they had prompt dental inspection and treatment and even going to another town so they got the best treatment for braces etc.

Cigarettes were recommended for stress as well. My mother never smoked till she set off to visit her dying father and a brother in law gave her a couple of packs of cigarettes saying it would help her.

My youngest has just heard she got the job she has had two interviews for and had set her heart on! :j:j:j
