The problem with high rise blocks is that the fire services can only reach so far. I'm not sure how many floors up is the limit, but above that no ladders or water jets can reach.

Helicopters can't get to the roof due to the turbulence, smoke and heat.

I'm a bit surprised that since the Ronan Point gas explosion in, ? the 70s was it? or the 60s, in East London, that gas is still installed in high rise blocks. Although, if the heating/water is communal, I suppose the gas boilers could be confined to the basement, and aren't in individual flats.

Edit.......Ronan Point was a 22-storey tower block in Newham, East London, which partly collapsed on 16 May 1968 when a gas explosion blew out some load-bearing walls, causing the collapse of one entire corner of the building

They can't possibly have clad a tall building in stuff that burns? Yet eye witness reports say the cladding was on fire.

I've seen it clearly on fire on the few images I've seen.

I've not been looking at/for photos, but even I spotted that I could clearly see individual cladding panels that had flames on them when around them was black... so I'd say it looks, to me, like something burnt. If not the panels - then the fixings.

    What a bummer.

Might be an idea to remove thanks, too.

Me too - I looked at the new persona's profile for other posts and became more suspicious.
Glad to have my suspicions confirmed, now heading back to mark all their posts as spam.

Sometimes, although the original design is sound, the builders take shortcuts. Ronan Point collapsed because, although all the panels were supposed to be bolted together, that was awkward to do as the holes didn't always line up. So, the builders only put a few of the bolts in!
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    That's criminal. :(

Mind you, without going into details, I have had personal experience of a builder of a block of flats taking short cuts and leaving the block sub-standard. Luckily, after a lot of wrangling, it was all put right by the insurance provisions, and the underwriters went after the builder, who was a biggish company.
It all took ages, though, about 5 years.

QUOTE:31 May 2011 - There are no happy endings to a fire in a high rise structure. ... 99% of the world's ladder trucks can't reach above the 7th floor whereas MOST high rises are at-least 12 floors and above.UNQUOTE

Also, apparently water jets can only reach about 100ft too.

A few years ago, there was a programme on TV about how to be a survivor. One of the things they recommended was, when booking a hotel room, try not to go higher than the 7th or 8th floor, for that very reason.
    .

A few minutes of bother which might save your life.

Some people say that when they are on holiday they don't want to think of gloom and doom, and why be so pessimistic?
Well, my answer to that is, do they walk straight out into the road, or do they stop and look right, left and right again?

Anyway, what this programme pointed out was that the people that do consider the worse case scenarios are the ones who survive!
