Cinema Getting Too Expensive?

Options
I love a trip to the cinema but it is getting more and more expensive.. especially as most cinema's don't allow you to bring your own food.. nowadays I just wait for the movie to come onto DVD that I like, watch it and then give it to the local charity shop =)

Sad thing is most cinema's these days are almost 3 quarters empty.. so surely it is better for them to get more people in the doors than nobody? it still costs them the same amount whether it is 1 person in the cinema or 100..

They should think about introducing some membership system where you get to pay monthly or something. Like CineWorld do.

  • I believe Odeon is going to be using the Cineworld 'subscription' method soon.

I've always taken a rucksack full of snacks for my kids to eat at the cinema. In fact, ever since I've been going to the cinema I've taken my own snacks with. I don't think i've ever been stopped going in; nor asked what was in my bag.

We did end up still spending £3.80 on a SMALL popcorn for my popcorn obsessed son. I felt cheated buying that.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Cinema prices are now ridiculous. When you also consider that you are highly unlikely to watch any film in peace, (mobile phones, chatting, rowdiness, sweet wrappers etc), and that the cinemas don't want to do anything about the "idiots" then I'll continue to stay away.

Odeon have been running a trial of "Limitless" at some places since about the middle of last year.

We are really lucky with regards to cinemas near me a new one opened up 2 years ago and it's only £4 a ticket and they take part in the meerkat scheme so on tuesday and wednesday it's only £2 pp

Also their popcorn and drinks are really cheap went a few months back and 2 large drink, large popcorn and tickets was just over £12 :)

They let you bring items in too like sweets they really don't mind. It's not the most amazing place very basic but you don't care when you see the price

Me too, me and my other half would rather wait for it to appear on Prime/Netflix or even buy the DVD which is cheaper than 2 tickets to the cinema. Then we can watch it without the mobile phones/chatting etc and we don't have to sit through over 20 minutes of adverts and trailers before the film starts.

I can see the benefits of not going to the cinema and waiting for the film to hit Netflix or Amazon instant/video but I like to go to the cinema and see films and if I like them then at some point eg 6 months I buy it on dvd or I watch it again on Netflix or Amazon instant/video.

OP have you got Meerkat Movies? A one day travel policy costing a couple of quid will get you 2for1 cinema Tues & Weds for a whole year.

And I always take my own drink and snack.

Also keep an eye out for free previews, no ads or trailers before hand. There is a thread on the Freebies board.

Also if you have children it's £2.50 for children's movies over the weekend. It can't get better than that as far as movie watching is concerned and the movies are really good.
  • my local cinema costs £2.50 weekdays and £2.50 Weekends - Bargain!
