But if they're locked away, they can't possibly re-offend as often.christaitfife wrote: »You can lock anyone up for a long time for committing a crime, but this:
1. Costs a heck of a lot
2. Achieves little other than taking people off streets - but they will likely be released at some stage anyway.
3. Institutionalizes offenders
4. Condemns an offender to a negative environment. Prisons are full of people with attitudes glorifying crime.
1. And ?
2. Better off the streets than robbing old ladies or abusing children
3. Their choice to do the deed so being institutionalised comes with the territory.
4. Rather prisons full of people glorifying crime than those that think the system is so weak they can do as they please.christaitfife wrote: »That is not true. The rate is in the bid 30 percentile. This is about average for mainland Europe.
We're not comparing with the rest of Mainland Europe. We're discussing our system.
England and Wales - 13.7%
Scotland 3.7%
We're at position 28

The fundamental principle here is to treat those who put effort into rehabilitating with respect, courtesy and as people. Sorry, respect is not something I feel sex offenders or murderers deserve. I'm quite prepared to accept their intentions to change their futures, but I will never respect them. I think the problem is public perception.... we like to be outraged bay Daily Mail-esque articles about the crimes and then to promptly forget about the offender.
Of course I'm outraged at some types of crimes, aren't you?
And if those viscous types are locked away, why should I not forget about them?

I had no idea the state funded prison visits.
Why do they fund hotels too?
Aren't prison visits quite short?
A working person might have a 10 hour day easily between commuting & actual work.
Would your travel & visit take more than 10 hours?
when i lived in london, a girl in the block of flats used to get paid travel and accommodation for herself and her 3 kids to visit their dad on the isle of wight once a month!0
