For those applying for financial services I would avoid GMX accounts. I was declined more than 3 times by a large lender and when I finally got through to them they said it was because they don't lend to people who apply with GMX email accounts [amongst others]. They also said they had credit checked me 3 times [which apparently the FCA requires them to tell me] and this may well have damaged my rating further. The helpful call operator went on to say that providers like gmail or live are better as they check who you are by asking for a mobile or landline.

yup , I hate gmail.com and Hotmail accounts

they will be saying they do not like your car colour next , or the colour of your garage door

Well Virgin email is still not working properly this morning. I'm receiving emails on my virgin.net account but anything I try to send doesn't seem to be going anywhere even though there are no SMTP error messages popping up and they appear in the Sent folder of my email client Windows Live mail.

Looking at the VM Community Forums it seems like plenty of other people are having similar problems. I do have a Gmail account but I need to stick with the @virgin.net because I've had it for years and it is so widely used.

I wish VM would pull their corporate finger out!

Same problem here – since last Thursday! I spoke to them yesterday and they said they were 'aiming' to have it restored by 5 p.m., but nothing happened. This morning I booked a 'conversation' with them and they said it would be restored 'tonight', but again, nothing has happened. This is rank incompetence on their part and they need to reduce clients' bills as a result. Very annoyed.

As above, I think I spoke too soon when I said it was fixed. It worked Ok for a while but it looks like the emails I sent yesterday although showing as 'sent' never actually went anywhere . This morning once I had fought to get myself a steady connection (no mean feat with Virgin which drops out all the time) I've done some test emails to family members and they either won't send - I get an error message with unable to connect to the server) or they arrive an hour or so later.

I'm going to have breakfast and if it still looks broken when I get back I'll have a look on the Virgin forums again and maybe give them another call.

I wonder if because I have a blueyonder account is the reason that I don't get as much trouble as the virgin.net account holders do.

VM have now put back the 'fix by date' several times, the latest posting now says Tuesday 29th. The reality is VM simply make this up as they go along.

My email seems to be working again- but staying connected is proving more difficult today than usual.

    I'm already browsing other providers

why is your connection so bad , I presume you are using their cable service , have engineers tested lines?

I'm not sure what I have , it runs in through wires to a hub in the house and I use wi fi extenders. I'm always getting my speeds tested , they say mine is fair at 12-19 uploading and 1-3 down (or it might be the other way round). When it was installed they couldn't test speeds in most of the house as there was no signal, but the engineers told me that was normal as I needed wi fi extenders.

My house is fairly large and old so it is quite thick walled and there was only one logical place to run wires in due to having a wide paved drive, the hub is unfortunately in the corner of the house which is why I use extenders.

My main PC is upstairs and uses one of the extensions but can also pick up a second extender occasionally. While I am working I often just lose my connection and have to manually search for the signal again , normally his happened every hour or two, at the moment it is about every 20 minutes. Another strange thing is that my neighbours use a service called Panda and that is also in their downstairs side room, and yet that shows a stronger signal in my house than my own Virgin connection. Apologies if this doesn't sound logical , I'm not very computer savvy.

may I suggest you look at home plugs , both the basic type and the ones that have wifi , unless you are referring to wifi extenders as homeplugs?

buy from amazon or argos as there is a return policy with them.

I thought virgin had upgraded everone from 20 megs to a minimum of 50 megs?

basic home plug , plug one in next to your routrer and plug wire from router in , place other in office/etc and run lead from it to PC

wifi versions also emit wifi from the sender one and the receiving one , you can then turn off virgin wifi as well as wifi , you can plug a lead in as well as wifi

    example from argos http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4482909.htm
