The last time I used a pressure cooker, it had weights on!
Anyhow, I'm horrified by the current prices of what used to be a fairly basic piece of kit.
Can anyone recommend a make or do you really only get what you pay for?

There's a very long thread on this on here somewhere, I expect a clever board guide can merge them in a bit. But you will see that we all seem passionate about the brand we have (if we like pressure cookers at all) I have used Prestiges and Tefals in the past and stopped because they were so hissy and steamy and frightened me, and the food always seemed to need to be cooked in such a lot of water that it all needed reducing to get a decent tasting gravy (for stews etc). But my life has been revolutionised by my lovely Kuhn Rikon. It doesnt' hiss at all (isn't meant to in fact) it cooks in much less water than others do and I LOVE it - so much so that I now have a big one and a small one. You can get a big one from Lakeland and if you hate it I believe they will refund you - they are very good like that. Kuhn Rikon every time !

(I don't have shares in either KR or Lakeland, but it just is a really helpful kitchen gadget)

Argos have pressure cookers from £19.99(the ones with weights on)
I have this automatic prestige one(too scared to use a bells n whistle type)
    http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/8612012/Trail/searchtext%3EPRESSURE+COOKER.htm

I tried the Kuhn Rikon from Lakeland,£88 at the time, looks great, cooked fantasticaly well, nothing stuck, but it frightened the life out of me,it was great for anything needing less than 10mins,but after 10 it would suddenly let out a whoosh of steam and every few mins i had to release steam using a wooden spoon on the valve,it just wouldnt maintain pressure, was always operating above the level it should, ended up hating it(tho it did cook quicker than my prestige),I phoned Lakeland and the agreed to refund me...in defence of kuhn rikon,i think the problem may have been my gas cooker, even the smallest gas ring at its lowest setting seemed to be too strong for it to cope with,I find the prestige a lot quieter and easier to release the steam by just flicking a switch.

I like yours Pink, I might get one of those. I want a steel one as I'm scared of eating food from aluminium pans.

I cannot fault my old TEFAL, its probably a good 30Years old, still has the original weights and only replacement was the valve (cost about 30p). It was handed down to me from my Mother at least 20Years ago, including all its vegetable separator units.

The prices of them nowadays are outrageous, however they last a lifetime.

Always go for stainless steel. It costs more, but it's worth it. Never aluminium.

I got a low pressure pressure cooker from QVC, its a lot less scary, but still cooks things in a far shorter time than normal

    Hi folks,
I have an old 'ultra 2000' pressure cooker (the one with a swivel dial with one dot and two dots) and it needs a spare gasket and 'ready to serve' indicator. My present gasket is black rubber and akin to a hard biscuit! :rotfl: - needless to say, getting up to pressure isn't a swift job :(. Trouble is, this cooker is so ancient I have no idea if its stainless steel or aluminium. Any idea which?
