Try telling that to John Ashcroft.

    John Ashcroft?

Oh I see, he was running for the Missouri senate in 2000. His opponent got killed in a car crash shortly before the election, but still managed to win the election.

I can see the connection, but nevertheless am still inclined to believe that even the Democratic convention would be unlikely to select a dead person as their candidate for president.

Are we getting into a situation where the Tories and Labour will both be openly backing the Democrats in November?

As obvious as their natural preferences are, normally both parties try to keep their noses clean on the subject, in anticipation of their least preferred option winning. It doesn't feel like it's going to pan out that way this time.

Hilary won big in the Virgin Islands by 86% to 14%.

OK there were only 7 delegates at stake. (And only about 1500 people voted.) But every little helps.

Puerto Rico is today. Everything else left is on the 7th, apart from DC.

Hilary wins bigish in Puerto Rico by 60% to 40%.

Oddly enough, despite the fact that Puerto Ricans don't get to vote in the presidential election, they have 60 pledged delegates on offer, which is more than a lot of actual US states.

In other news, a former Secret Service officer has a book out soon that promises to blow the lid off the real Hilary Clinton.

I was reading an interesting piece on the 1800 election today. One candidate accused the other of being a hermaphrodite and thus having none of the redeeming features of either a man or a woman! The accused candidate in turn put the word out that his rival candidate for the election was dead and so there was no point in voting for him!

I strongly suspect that even a casual study of (say) Roman consular elections would produce similar examples of dirty tricks and negative campaigning tactics.

Associated Press have declared that dear Hilary has indeed won, on the basis that she already has 1,812 pledged delegates and 571 superdelegates, which gives her the 2,383 she needs for a majority.

P.S. Clinton already has her victory rally booked for Brooklyn this evening.

I believe the phrase ' stab in the back' had a slightly more literal meaning in the old days.

I think a lot of Bernie's supporters will switch for Trump - even a Democrats spokes person said this last night on Newsnight.

I love the arrogant British sniffy liberal attitude to Trump - it reveals an ignorance on their part as to the true reasons driving his vote - namely wanton industrial / business decline thanks to an elite squeezing ever more profit for themselves at the sake of everyone else by way of off shoring*

I think a revolution is taking place, lets hope to God the Brits join in and don't bottle it at the referendum

    * YAWN - yes Trump voters know he's a billionaire that has off shored and used migrants, yawn - classic cookie cutter British liberal argument and totally irrelevant

If you are referring to Mr Caesar, I think he was appointed dictator for life shortly before he was assassinated. So his death wasn't really part of any democratic process.
