"Greeters" in shops

Before I begin: I'd like to state that I sort of see the point in "greeters" (employees who hover and make eye contact with you at shop entrances) when the establishment sells things (clothes/food/whatever).

What REALLY annoys me, though, are greeters in banks, and (yes) Post Offices.
I went to make a bank deposit a few days ago and whilst obviously altering course to make my way to the cash desks, in was nonetheless intercepted by a greeter who then questioned me on my intentions. I was then advised to use the fast pay-in letterbox, the chap wasn't too happy when i refused citing the incompetence of his colleauges colleagues who had managed to lose £200 of mine for 72 hours on the previous attempt. All the greeter had managed to do was further delay me, how is that improved customer service?

Then, yesterday, the post office. Again, I tried to veer away from the greeter, again was intercepted. Strangely enough, I was there to post something, and no, I didn't want to use the self service machines.:mad:

Shopping in a town centre is bad enough - having to dodge beggars, chugggers, survey takers. Now you have to dodge greeters in every bloody establishment too. Why can't they just have someone there who you can go to if you need help? Why must they be in your face and take up more of your time? Aargh.

Oh, absolutely. However, the Post Office that I go to is laid out in such a fashion that the when the greeter intercepts you, you have nowhere to go. They block you from going to the counter!
Regardless, I shouldn't have to actively consider tactics to avoid these people. I'm obviously there to do business, stop antagonising your customers!

If he had convinced you to use the faster paying in machine then that would have saved the time of the cashier as he wouldn't have to manually deal with you. The greeters in the bank are all about sending people to the automatic machines and keeping the cashiers free for those people who needed a direct face to face transaction (which you didn't need)

Plenty of people have had bad experiences with the automatic machines and prefer to deal with a person.

I was accosted by a greeter a few months ago and was reluctantly persuaded to put my cheque into the machine. Needless to say, it botched it up, just threw up an "out of order" screen and I had to leave without my card, without my cheque and without a receipt. Not happy at all. Greeter couldn't (or wouldn't) do anything - just told me to come back in tomorrow after they've emptied it to pick up my card. So caused me a another journey (at my cost and time) to go back again.

So, no thanks. I'll use a person. If the bank don't put on enough people or close the desks and make me use a machine, I'll just switch to another bank.

You are lucky to still have a town post office, they closed ours and installed it in Smiths.
