Has anyone tasted the Lidl, Pillitteri, Canadian Icewine (2015 Cabernet Sauvignon), £5.99? I bought one at the week-end to give as a housewarming prezzy, (mainly cos it was in a cute box!). The recipient is a bit of a wine snob and I am now wondering if it is any good? Would be a waste of time me trying it myself as do not like sweet wines. Can't find any online reviews...they all seem to be for a different grape variety, (Vidal), and year.

    Thanks :)

Normally shop at Aldi, where fresh produce now carries a straightforward BB date, and has done for some time.

Surprised to see this morning that Lidl still stick to the old-style date codes in order to hide the old stuff - a pretty incredible piece of deceit, when you think about it.

I know the first two digits are the week number, and the second two digits are the day (Monday 01, Tuesday 02 etc) of the week, but given that Lidl (at least in our local branch) refrigerate much less of their produce than Aldi do and the date's that much more important as a result, I find it annoying. Some things, like asparagus, have a very short life, and concealing the date is just bad customer service.

It is always OOS in our locals!

But when I asked a question elsewhere online about Canadian Icewines in general, it got good comments and recommendations.

Aldi Everyday Value Dark Chocolate (100g 30p)

I think someone was saying that the White chocolate version was not very nice, but the Dark Chocolate is extremely good VFM.

It's quite hard (especially straight from the fridge) with a rich, bitter chocolate flavour and a bitter aftertaste. The texture is slightly grainy (especially compared to the Lidl Dark Chocolate which is quite sweet and creamy) and I like its overall lack of sweetness.

    Excellent VFM at 30p.

'Twas me, but I do buy the dark stuff for baking purposes. I wouldn't dream of eating it neat though...unlike the white stuff (from Lidl, of course).

I'm not sure of the validity of this thread any longer. Surely people don't rush off to buy something just because someone else likes it?

As for recommendations, if we're talking about groceries then I could list my entire shopping list and tell you it's all good. But, unless you buy exactly what I do then it's useless information.

I don't get why people still treat Aldi/Lidl as something to be wary of and need validation of products to buy. There are no comparison threads for Tesco, Asda etc. And I can guarantee that they have far more questionable items of produce than either Aldi or Lidl do.

As I said previously, just go and do your normal shopping as you would anywhere else, then report back your findings and whether you found them to be better or worse than your usual supermarket.

Spot on Feral Moon and I've said the same thing myself way back in the thread. For some bizarre reason though Aldi and Lidl are still viewed differently from other supermarkets - even though they're to all intents and purposes exactly the same apart from the prices.

If the thread isn't relevant to an individual, there is always the option not to read it.

There are still significant differences between Aldi / Lidl and the Big Four. Aside from the price advantage (which although may have narrowed, remains - and can easily be identified on MySupetmarket), there is far less choice which means the thread highlights the availability of products, seasonal changes and new items. I find shopping at Aldi to be particularly efficient, given that I can be in and out with my weekly shop in just 10 minutes. The time saving is priceless.
