Is it? Not heard of trail braking then?
Not that I would bother with trail braking on the road, but it is certainly not a golden rule in four wheeled motor sport.0 -
It means this....
You bumped your car and it needs looking at.
How where and why it happened is irrelavant.
Without anyone seeing it, it could be a variety of issues or just a single one.
Oh let me guess then, can you claim against the council for not gritting the road?
You know like the post that got removed, the OP also kept coming back with a full explanation to strangers on a forum.
If you have a problem with a poster, report it. Don't sit there accusing posters directly...0 -
A similar thing happened to a guy in work while driving g his BMW. I think the bill came to over £2000 which his insurance company picked up.0

After its sorted out OP, perhaps invest in some advanced driver training with a session or two on a skid pan.0

That could be a good idea, Look at the Institute of Advanced Motorists and RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders.
Something else that I will try when I next change my tyres is Michelin CrossClimate tyres. They are not cheap tyres, but if they live up to the hype they will be worth the extra.0 -

Well that is a photo of the damage, just incase anyone was interested! I had to claim through my insurers and now they want to write the car off. It seems like madness and obviously counts as a claim against me now. The guy did tell me though they had over 100 calls this morning alone due to ice related issues, so I'm not on my own or just some !!!!!! driver. It happens.
But for what it's worth I'm just wondering now I've uploaded a picture, if anyone has any better idea of the damage caused or is it just impossible without looking under the car. I don't know if it's worth buying it back or to start car hunting.
Thanks for the replies.0 -

It looks like something is bent/broken, the car is beyond economical repair, that doesn't mean it's not repairable. If you are not attached to the car then take the money and seek a replacement.0 -
you said previously that the car is a 2005 focus so the trade would value it at a fairly low price, so they wont want to repair it as it would easily end up costing them more than the car is worth
cost of car hire and repairs will quickly exceed the value of the car making it beyond economic repair in the eyes of the insurer
you also said you have a £550.00 insurance excess so you could end up coming out of this with very little money and increased insurance for the next few years due to the claim0 -

Not a great surprise. It seems like madness and obviously counts as a claim against me now.
Umm, yep. Who else should it be a claim against? How do you see this as being not your fault, and who should be footing the bill if not your insurer? The guy did tell me though they had over 100 calls this morning alone due to ice related issues, so I'm not on my own or just some !!!!!! driver. It does, yes. But only where people fail to take account of fairly predictable road conditions. But for what it's worth I'm just wondering now I've uploaded a picture, if anyone has any better idea of the damage caused or is it just impossible without looking under the car. It really needs the underside inspecting. Is it just the lower suspension arm bent, or is the car structure bent where the arm bolts on? Obviously your insurer have decided that the risk of the latter is too high to be worth spending time and money investigating on a low-value car.
By the way, were the modifications declared to them?0 -
^^ Either way, OP is rid of those terrible wheels, life can only get better from this point on!
