Post-Brexit Sunderland: 'If this money doesn't go to the NHS, I will go mad'
I meet a former social worker, Shirley Bain, who said that her family’s personal reliance on the NHS meant she was very influenced by the promises to divert EU funding. “It hit home with me because I’m using the NHS quite a lot at the minute. My son is really, really poorly in hospital and has been in and out since May.
Shirley invites me to a community centre where she volunteers, which recently had its funding for youth services cut. The £350m a week could also help reopen them, she says.
Shirley seems genuinely worried that the £350m number might not be true. She resolves to charter a bus with Peta from the north-east to meet the new foreign secretary. “I would go mad if this money doesn’t go into the NHS, I will go mad. I want to be assured that this money – because that’s why I voted to come out,” says Shirley.
Poor poor Shirley. Genuinely believed the lies from the Leave campaign.

Yes, if the professional doomsters all shout loud enough for long enough telling the world we're doomed it eventually becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
In the fullness of time hopefully they will realise there are prosperous countries in the world that don't need the EU to hold their hand whilst managing their affairs.

If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.

She should do some research next time she's asked to vote then.

  • The IFS has released a report noting that mere trade access to the Single Market is not enough for Britain and that we require Full Membership if we're to avoid the decrease in tax revenues completely wiping out any savings from not paying EU membership fees.
Britain will be worse off financially if it fails to negotiate full membership of the single market following the Brexit vote, according to a new report.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has pointed out the difference between having membership of the trade bloc and settling for "access".

Ouch.... That's another 'inconvenient truth' for the Brexiteers.

So is that assuming we don't do trade deals with other nations too, ie all other things being equal, if we don't join the single market the cost will be 4%?

If it's that simple...and as you brexiteers seem to be in the majority, why don't you shout louder and make your post-brexit economic nirvana a self-fulfilling prophecy? ;)

The UKs hospitals, schools, transport, housing could not possibly cope with a 4% expansion which is tied into free migration across EU+UK (that would be part of the 'Norwegian model' single market membership).

And successive UK governments are legendary at not planning for / not addressing any kind of economic growing pain. As long as the privileged stay privileged...

It would lead to further social dislocation and inequality.
Now we're getting to the nub of the reason so many voted out.

Today the bbc reported that 1/3 of families couldnt afford their rent more than one month after job loss, this shows how much debt people have and whats to come

These low rates and QE is simply storing up future inflation which will raise prices and rates, and with the death of new btl its taken away huge demand for properties, plus short term high capital appreciation makes it even less attractive

People around london anyway are realising this and not paying 400k for a 2 bed in zone 5/6 and i saw a flat today in a block that were getting snapped up for 350k pre brexit/SD in days.....now its just been reduced 325k to 310k and been on the market for months. Excellent condition minutes from a station etc

I do question the validity of such statements, does this mean that 1/3 of people have not been employed at the same place for 5years? Because statutory redundancy payments should cover the first months expenses (let alone just their rent as claimed) if you have been employed for 5 years.

    Really?

What is it about Britain that makes us almost uniquely incapable amongst developed economies to manage growth?

Do you have that little faith in our people?

Seems a real counsel of despair to me....
