Our trade with our biggest trade partner, the EU, was rising.

Our trade with the rest of the World was rising even more so clearly being in the EU didn't prevent that.

If we now make it more difficult to trade with the EU, and trade with our biggest partner falls materially, then we'll have to scramble around desperately trying to replace that from elsewhere.

It's the very definition of running flat out just to stand still.

eek, need to point out that the same argument applies to Scotland where your biggest trade partner is the UK, by quite some distance (64% rUK, 15% EU).

So are you changing your stance on an independent Scotland in light of potentially ruining trade with the rest of the UK? Or will Scotland have to scrabble around to replace that which is lost from the 64%?

I'm not saying I disagree with your analysis above regarding the UK and the EU, just that your position doesn't appear to be consistent.

clearly if our trade with the rest of the world is rising in actual terms and rising as a share of total trade, then by definition we are NOT running flat out just to stand still.

I am not quite with that, I thought Hamish was pro UK?
'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. A single market without barriers visible or invisible giving you direct and unhindered access to the purchasing power of over 300 million of the worlds wealthiest and most prosperous people' Margaret Thatcher

Really that would need him to clarify, and that's pretty much what I was asking for too.

However, as far as I can tell it apparently depends on Nicola's red lines being met. Should we lose single market membership and freedom of movement they are also red lines for Hamish.

House prices are slowing and falling by 1% in some areas. We need at least a 5% correction this year!

What you conveniently forget is that it will be equally as difficult for the EU to sell to the UK - and they sell us a lot more stuff than we sell them.

What an opportunity for British companies to replace EU imports with UK sourced goods.

Why do we need the rest of the world at all? In the BritNat nu-economy we make everything ourselves. Works for North Korea?
