Assuming that they can meet all the terms it wouldn't bother me. However its impossible for them to do that in the 5 year timeframe. Even if achieved that add on the 7 year wait for free movement and its 12 years before a Turk sets foot anywhere in the EU under free movement.
I think the most likely outcome IF both sides really wanted it would be for 10 years plus 10 years wait. At which point surely both Turkey and the EU will look quite different
It may have escaped your notice that Merkel has already made her own decisions about key matters, without getting the agreement of the nations within the EU. She is quite capable of doing so again if it suits her interests.
So much for democracy and self-government for the sovereign nations of Europe…0 -
Turkey might look quite different in ten years, but in which direction? Over the past few years they've been moving away from secular democracy, not towards it. That's why it's all the more concerning that the EU hasn't simply closed the door on Turkish membership.
yes I am concerned about the direction of movement of turkey (assuming the little I have read is correct rather than phony internet experts) and while turkey is not 'European' in its politics (ie secular) it wont get in.
Certainly economically turkey in 20 years will be far richer than it is today just like it is far far richer today than it was 20 years ago.
If politically is becomes more 'European' they will get in if not they wont0 -

I dont know enough about European politics and power to know if there is any truth to merkle holding ultimate political power in europe (I doubt it).
But if for some reason she does hold ultimate power in a system where its almost proportional representation she must have the love of a lot of other MEPs. I dont see how I can object to a politician convincing other politicians that her ideas are a good roadmap and surely her views hold more sway and merit than an internet poster I dont know
Also somewhat off topic but I respect the fact that she obtained a degree in physics I feel that gives her an advantage over most the politicians who tend to have degrees in law or politics.0 -

Will we be plunged into a Clapton inspired dark age of ignorance, xenophobia, and suspicion of our neighbours, or will we continue marching towards progress and the future??

VOTE REMAIN
another toxic post from our very own toastie whose own view on immigration is

Why do you continue to lie, lie, lie, lie? If the UK decided to accept X amount of refugees from a war torn country into our lands, would you say that the UK is determining the fate of the rest of Europe because in the future these terrible refugees will be able to go be poor elsewhere in Europe? Are we not allowed to make our own decisions?0 -
