  • I see too that the migrant camp at Dunkirk has been destroyed in a fire which is said to have been started following an altercation between Kurds and Afghans:
Corenne Torre, head of the humanitarian group in France, said while 900 people were evacuated to safe shelters including local gyms, some 600 migrants were unaccounted for.

Meanwhile in Germany Deutsche Welle and others are reporting upon increasing numbers of young migrants turning to prostitution:
Aid charities see Germany's wavering social system as the catalyst for the rise. Once refugees turn 18 they no longer qualify for state support for young people, forcing them to turn to prostitution as a way to make ends meet.

This whilst the UN asks the EU not to return any more migrants to Hungary:
European countries must stop returning asylum seekers to Hungary due to deteriorating conditions there for new arrivals including children, and allegations of abuse, the United Nations said Monday.
The situation for asylum seekers and other migrants has long been considered dire in Hungary, but it has worsened since the country last month introduced a new law on the systematic detention of all asylum seekers.

The EIU has put Luxembourg in the “hard” Brexit category, along with countries such as Croatia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, Malta, the Netherlands and Slovenia.
    except for the dutch ..

    An interesting article, thanks.
As it goes on to say
"The Economist’s Intelligence Unit (EIU) has published a report on 5 April which outlines the EU member states’ positions (soft, hard, or hard-core) on the negotiations for Brexit.

The EIU has put Luxembourg in the “hard” Brexit category, along with countries such as Croatia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Czech Republic, Malta, the Netherlands and Slovenia."

It is well worth a read by all sides.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
  • Meanwhile the UN reports a rise in slavery in Libya, which is where many west Africans head to try and get a boat to Europe:
the International Organization for Migration suggests that the trade in human beings has become so normalised that people are being traded in public. “The latest reports of ‘slave markets’ for migrants can be added to a long list of outrages [in Libya],” said Mohammed Abdiker, IOM’s head of operation and emergencies. “The situation is dire. The more IOM engages inside Libya, the more we learn that it is a vale of tears for all too many migrants.”

Yes. My local one was held in my downstairs toilet. Fortunately this means I now have the lofty position of being able to sneer at 99.9% of the electorate.

Probably best not to be sniffy about it though :)

Robert Walters’ fees soar with banks ‘bored’ of Brexit
Britain’s biggest banks have become “bored with Brexit — it’s yesterday’s conversation”, City recruiter Robert Walters said.

The headhunter said banks are now on a hiring blitz and making a commitment to the UK, which helped net fees over here jump 27% to £23.9 million in the first three months of this year, with a “notable upturn” in financial services.

Robert Walters’ eponymous chief executive explained: “The banks are now looking positively towards the UK — there are signs of commitment. More specialised areas such as compliance, cyber-security, change management, and investment management in particular are growing.”
Walters noted hiring in manufacturing was also up about 20% in the UK.

“The benign attitude in the UK seems to be continuing. People got bored with Brexit; it’s business as usual. When I have lunches with bankers about the state of the world, Brexit is yesterday’s conversation. At the moment they’re just getting on with business.”

Some one would like to exclude me from posting as apparently I am not qualified due to where I live and my intention to spend my old age in the that same Country.
There I feel better for saying that as I will not be bullied into silence
    SO
Not my opinion but from the daily Brexit email from Politico.eu

"— Hundreds of government contracts with the private sector that were due to expire this year will be automatically extended because civil servants are too busy with Brexit. One procurement adviser to the government told the FT that these included more than 250 contracts in a wide range of services, from health and justice to pensions payments"

This is something I have mentioned a number of times. While 52% only think of the new opportunities opening up to Britain, someone needs to consider the lost opportunity cost of the British Government spending so much time and intellectual resource on Brexit.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.

Thanks - yet another example of commercial and local citizen priorities trumping abstract Brussels ideals.

One of the main Remain arguments I come up against now is this assertion that trade and jobs are second fiddle to EU cohesion. Absolute codswallop, as we argued many moons ago, when it comes down to the wire there is no way national politicians will be sacrificing their jobs and trade.

I know it sounds unlikely but Ross Kemp did a brilliant program on this for Sky.

    Here's a review
Ross Kemp: Libya’s Migrant Hell review – a deeply powerful plea

The actor’s style may be as subtle as a sledgehammer, but it’s just right for an issue as huge, horrifying and urgent as the refugee crisis.

MADRID – Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was on Monday set to hold a summit in the Spanish capital with the leaders of six other Southern European nations.

The meeting hosted by Rajoy is to focus on the future of the European Union in light of the United Kingdom’s desire to the leave the bloc, as well as the future negotiations that would allow this to happen.

Those set to attend Monday’s meeting included the presidents of France, François Hollande; Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades; and the prime ministers of Greece, Alexis Tsipras; Italy, Paolo Gentiloni; Portugal, Antonio Costa; and Malta, Joseph Muscat.

The gathering would be the third of its kind among Southern European nations – the last ones taking place in Athens in September 2016 and in Lisbon at the end of January.

With the UK Prime Minister Theresa May now having formally notified the EU of her country’s wish to leave the bloc, Brexit is expected to feature on the agenda for the talks in Madrid.

Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the EU, is scheduled to make an initial statement to the other leaders, at the invitation of Rajoy.

Spanish government sources told EFE that Madrid hoped a common position would be ratified among the seven Southern European countries that could be shared by the other remaining 20 members of the EU.
