    Focus continues on the passing of the EU exit legislation, enabling the UK government to trigger Article 50. The bill is currently in the House of Lords and the so called committee stage begins on today, where the Lords will discuss and vote on amendments. It is widely viewed that the Lords will not delay the bill and the UK remains on track to trigger Article 50 by the end of March, perhaps at the EU summit in Malta on 9-10 March. If the Lords agree the amendments, the bill will go back to the House of Commons for approval and then back and forth between the two chambers until the wording is agreed upon.

    One of Germany's most senior banking executives, Dr Andreas Dombret,has said the vote to leave the European Union should not be taken as an excuse to "penalise" the City. In a private meeting in Frankfurt earlier this month, he said that London's position as the financial services "gateway" to the EU could be undermined and that the Brexit negotiations will be a "two way street". He however made it clear that Germany saw Britain as an ally, particularly when it came to maintaining global regulatory standards.

    Christ alive , for "uncompelling and uninteresting " motors look no further than any VAG Group badged car. VW,Seat and Skoda produce the most boring,lifeless cars known to man. They may be reliable,well at least the Skoda's are but apart from that the whole group has relied on the golf and Passat chassis for decades.

    I've had 2 Octavia's and they were the most reliable cars I've ever owned but boring as fook... At Least Vauxhall have tried to update their models whereas the latest VW Golf looks like the mark 2 Golf........... As for the French designs well Citroen seem to put all their effort into the looks of their cars but no effort in making them reliable.. French car manufacturers seem to have a constant problem with electrics in most of their models.

    At least the 3dr Vauxhall Corsa's that come out of the factory in Germany are put together well but you can't say the same about French cars.I'd have a Vauxhall over a Citroen or Renault any day and this comes from experience of owning both.

    French car firms have really taken leaps and bounds lately although not my cup of tea personally.
    Seriously???..................... The only decent thing about Citroen commercials are the engines, the rest is a pile of !!!!!......

    I thought the prevailing wisdom from the motor industry was that there were too many mass car manufacturers?

    This was a common perception going back to the late 90s, and if anything we can now add the likes of Kia, Hyundai, to this.

    You just know that if Apple or Google get into the car market by self-drive or some similar innovation, they are going to try and turn the concept of a car on it's head.

    They could easily seek to manufacture the whole hardware in China, and attempt to value add to the car using software and the whole package.

    This is much wider than a Brexit thing. It's about the changing nature of competition in this globalised market everyone goes on about.

    Kia is a third owned by Hyundai.

    Be a joint venture. They'll need the technical expertise of a global motor corporation. The fundamentals won't change.

    Car production, purchase and import/export has been discussed often on this thread.
    Here is a article about German car production in the USA.
    It is a long long read but might give us all a further inside into the complex global business that is making cars.
    This one paragraph from the article illustrates how big the BMW plant in Carolina USA is in the scheme of things.

    "And indeed, since it was founded about 100 years ago, BMW – which stands for Bavarian Motor Company – is no longer just Bavarian, or even German for that matter. In fact, the carmaker has been a global corporation for many years already, with 31 plants around the world. And the company’s biggest plant is no longer in Dingolfing, in Regensburg, or anywhere else in Bavaria or Germany: it’s in Spartanburg, South Carolina. BMW produces 400,000 vehicles there each year; a fifth of its total production. From here, the Munich carmaker exports more cars “Made in America” to the four corners of the globe than any of its American competitors: more than Ford, more than Chrysler, and more than General Motors. Seventy percent of the cars produced in Spartanburg are exported abroad. Only 30 percent are sold in the United States."

  • Following my post yesterday of a surge in UK manufacturers seeing a surge in orders, today news that in Germany has seen orders fall at the biggest rate in eight years:
    German industrial orders fell 7.4 percent in January, their biggest monthly fall in eight years due to a slump in domestic and euro zone demand
