Still cant see the issue myself. What I decide to throw away is upto me. What Tesco/Coop decide to throw away is upto them.

Tesco has since admitted it made a genuine mistake not to offer the bikes to local charities first, before throwing them out

"In future, we will ensure any similar items are first offered to local charities, as we do with a large range of products."

Taking goods home that had been written off, or giving them to others is gross misconduct, likely to result in dismissal.
I thought this too, hollydays (it seems that the OP's post detailing this has now been deleted)

Personally, I think the Co-op staff who are doing the above are on a bit of a sticky wicket.
I certainly wouldn't risk my job to give anybody any left over goods, regardless of how altruistic my motives were - or how loud the customer shouted.

I've resisted saying it so far , but it's not unknown for staff to keep things back or deliberately damage them so they get reduced. Staff theft accounts for a large proportion of what's euphamistically called " shrinkage".the stock still belongs to the company whether it's been written off or not,the staff have no right to appropriate it.
Her posts aptly demonstrates the dangers.

Yes, I think we are aware of that.
A lot more customers will enter the shop than numbers of staff , so that's no surprise .

But employee theft is treated much more seriously by the courts.

I think the point being made is that the aftermath of being caught stealing from a shop would be worse for an employee than for a customer as the employee stands to lose his job.
