A bit of a mixed bag lately.
I tried and gave up on Eileen by Ottessa Moshfegh - shortlisted for the Man Booker, but I have no idea why. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/23453099-eileen
Sounded interesting but after not very many pages, the style of writing was doing nothing for me at all and I got very bored very quickly.

On a more positive notes, The Followers by Rebecca Wait was a fascinating (and fictional) child's eye view of living inside a cult with a charismatic leader and where it can take people when they abdicate responsibility for themselves.

Also The Anchoress by Robyn Cadwallader is an exploration of what it would have been like to live a religious life walled up in a cell in medieval times, and the reasons that may have led to it. Not my usual thing but it kept me going and entranced to the end.

And on an easier reading more thrillery level I am currently engrossed in The Crooked House by Christobel Kent. A woman whose family was murdered ostensibly by her father when she was a child, and her visit back to find out what happened and why. Much better so far than Gone Girl - far better written and less predictable. Unless it fades toward the end, I will be thoroughly recommending it.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • For Crime fiction fans, I recently discovered a new author - Angela Marsons.

There are five novels featuring DI Kim Stone and I've galloped through the first three. They are good well-paced reads with an interesting lead character.

    The books (in order) are:
    Silent Scream
    Evil Games
    Lost Girls
    Playing Dead
    Blood Lines

Fortunately they are all available in my local library although I am 25th in the reservations queue for book four so it may be some time before I complete the set.

For those of you with children, I recommend "Sputnik's Guide to Life on Earth" by Frank Cottrell Boyce. I read it to my two 8 year old grandsons and they loved it (and so did I). They've already requested "Cosmic" by the same author. I think they could have read it themselves, but we do enjoy a sharing a book every Tuesday!

I finished this late last night.

7/10. This relationship-based book is a lighter read than I usually pick (some bits were slighlt graphic), and the short scene-per-chapter style made me think it was written in the style of a film. Overall, enjoyable but quite different to The Curious Incident...

I loved A Spot of Bother! I laughed out loud at the attempted 'spot' removal, written hilariously even though the situation is not funny at all. I liked the human observations. Yes, there are some short graphic 'scenes'.

  • The Last Days of Jack Sparks - Jason Arnopp.

THE MOST CHILLING AND UNPREDICTABLE THRILLER OF THE YEARIt was no secret that journalist Jack Sparks had been researching the occult for his new book. No stranger to controversy, he'd already triggered a furious Twitter storm by mocking an exorcism he witnessed.
Then there was that video: forty seconds of chilling footage that Jack repeatedly claimed was not of his making, yet was posted from his own YouTube account.
Nobody knew what happened to Jack in the days that followed - until now.

I love these books too! Have just finished Blood Lines so will return it to the library on Friday. They are based around where we live so all the places are familiar.

    I've just discovered Susie Stein.

Her 'Missing Presumed' was passed to me. An excellent, gripping thriller, beautiful writing, too.

Bit of a late joiner but I assume there'll be a new thread for 2017!

Just wanted to share that this year I managed to source the entire Agatha Raisin collection second hand, so read the lot - they are VERY entertaining, thoroughly recommend!

Also found a new favourite author - Lucinda Riley. ALL her books are great. Currently she is writing a new series, the third book has just been released. It's the Seven Sisters series. they are about contemporary people but with a recent historical bent. E.g. The Seven Sisters part is set in current times and part in early 1900s in Brazil, whilst the Cristo Redentor statue is being designed and built. Fascinating and really emotional too.
