  • I have read 2 more books this week: Not Quite Nice by Celia Imrie (the very talented actor). It was very light reading and very easy to digest, but I did not find the character's very believable and they were a bit one dimensional for my liking, but it only took me a few hours to read this book.

I also read The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell which was a much more enjoyable read. There were a few surprises and I could not wait to keep reading to find out how the book would end. I highly recommend this book and would give it 9/10

The author was on Radio 4's Book Club discussing this book a while back. Sounded a very interesting read.

At last I've finished "Birds Without Wings" by Louis de Bernieres. It was enjoyable, but tough going, with so much history that I didn't know anything about (end of the Ottoman Empire). Well worth the effort.

I've chosen something much shorter for my current read - "A Virtuous Woman" by Kaye Gibbons. It is completely different and will make an easy read, I think.

If I had to chose a single favourite book, an impossible task, it would be Birds Without Wings, greentiger.

The thread has gone quiet. I've read Camilla Lackberg's latest, Ice Child. As clever as usual, although I am seeing patterns. There was a similarity to Buried Angels. I hop she doesn't become predictable.

Reading The Magic Toyshop for book group now. I have a feeling that it won't have gone down well. It's an allegory and there are two in the group with a very prosaic mindset.

  • I am a bit late in the year to this thread but I'd like to join in as I am going through a slowdown in my reading and need to rekindle (excuse the pun!) my joy of reading.
I have just started the Private Lives of Pippa Lee by Rebecca Miller and I'm pleased to say I have got to page 100 and I'm carrying on with it. Page 100 is the point where I decide whether a book is worth continuing and the last two novels I started never made it past page 100!
I've only read six fiction books this year. Much as I enjoy reading blogs, vlogs and magazines they don't hit the spot in the same way as a book does!

I'm delighted to report that we had a great discussion on The Magic Toyshop in book group this morning.

I heard them start to talk about it as I made the tea and coffee, hearing that it was difficult. When I sat down I said that I wasn't surprised to hear that and asked if they realised it was allegorical and off they went - with some prompting questions along the way from me.

I loved it. Just like a great lesson with a good A-level class.

I agree: short, easy but also heartwarming!

I have been so undisciplined lately, part read books left right and centre but managed this one in 3 sittings:

8/10. It was a compellling read, but covered some difficult issues and by the end was downright depressing, it made me wonder what the point of anything is. I like the writing style though.

Just finished "A Virtuous Woman" by Kaye Gibbons.
Two unforgettable characters, Jack Ernest Stokes, known as Blinking Jack, and his wife, Ruby Pitt Woodrow Stokes, tell the story of their years together. Jack was forty and Ruby only twenty when they were married. For twenty-five years they lived together, man and wife, until Ruby died of lung cancer.
A quick, enjoyable read; a bit different.
