I'm now reading March Violets by Philip Kerr[/I

I've been putting off reading this, but you've got me interested in it, Upsidedown Bear. DH bought me the trilogy for Christmas. I did bring it out last week, but I chickened out and got 2 other books from the library and started them instead. I wouldn't normally have picked either of these books but they fit categories in my reading challenge!

The first was "Faceless" by Alyssa Sheinmel. It's a YA bestseller about a girl who suffers horrific burns and gets a face transplant and the issues she has to come to terms with. I really did enjoy it.

I'm now reading "Never Let Me Go" by Kazuo Ishiguro, for the category 'a romance set in the future'. A quarter of the way in and I'm not sure about it; as I said, it's not a genre I'd choose, but it's not so bad that I'll let it beat me.

I haven't yet ploughed through the 24 pages of this thread, but I love books and am ALWAYS either on the look out for one, or reading one. I have two on the go at the moment:

Playing to the Gallery by Grayson Perry
    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRqHSm0d9x3oVlrBpae8eCWfuAmza3P4NHe7n6U1b_DPWKP3yQR

A River Sutra by Gita Mehta
    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRG49GKrapoweyMnBqGJxjIivo-Fz6MNM0tWj7CfdG6HrbrwAGL

The first one is his articulate and entertaining take on different aspects of the art world. I've also got his Reith lectures on the computer somewhere, - the most popular since they began!

The River Sutra is a novel comprised of a series of interweaving stories, set in India. I am enjoying it so far.

I hope you enjoy it :)

I finished reading March Violets last night. I really enjoyed it. Bernie is a great character - he's very "real". When reading the books I sometimes think they could be fact not fiction as he seems so real to me.

I've just started to read Let the Devil Sleep by John Verdon.
Not sure about it yet - will read more.

I'm sorry I haven't posted for a while but I've been away helping take care of a terminally ill relative. I had very little time or inclination for reading.

I'm back home again now permanently and hope to do a bit of wallowing in some good books:j. I've had a quick whizz through the posts that I needed to catch up on and see you are collectively reading some interesting and intriguing sounding books:T.

The relative whose house I was staying in had mostly biographies on their bookshelves and whilst I enjoy a good biography it needs to be of someone I'm really interested in and my mood has to be right. I'm afraid I could spot nothing there to fit the bill.

There was one other book there that I dipped in and out of. It was Black Rainbow by Rachel Kelly which recounts her battle with depression through the healing power of poetry. It's an interesting concept and is basically an account of her illness and the specific poems that helped at various stages. I didn't read it chronologically, I'm afraid I looked in the List of Poems at the back, picked out ones I already know and read the bit of her story that they appeared to help.

I'm not sure I would recommend the book (to sufferers of depression or those who aren't) but I did find a fabulous poem, purely by accident, that was totally knew to me and which struck a chord on all sorts of levels:j.

I didn't finish Let the devil sleep by John Verdon. After reading 150 pages nothing much had happened and I really didn't "warm" to the characters so I decided to read something else.
I always used to finish reading books but now I think life is too short to read books you aren't enjoying. I read for pleasure and if it's not then I'll find something that is :)

I was debating reading the next Bernie Gunther novel but decided instead to read a book I randomly bought after following a link on a page I was reading about D J Molles's The Remaining books.

Going Home by A American. I think that may not be the authors real name

"If society collapsed, could you survive?

When Morgan Carter's car breaks down 250 miles from his home, he figures his weekend plans are ruined. But things are about to get much, much worse: the country's power grid has collapsed. There is no electricity, no running water, no Internet, and no way to know when normalcy will be restored - if it ever will be.

An avid survivalist, Morgan takes to the road with his prepper pack on his back. During the grueling trek from Tallahassee to his home in Lake County, chaos threatens his every step but Morgan is hell-bent on getting home to his wife and daughters - and he'll do whatever it takes to make that happen."

I enjoyed this so much that half way through it I ordered the next couple in the series - there are 7 so far

As they are published in the US I had to buy them as the library doesn't have them. I don't buy many new books but one of the joys of being debt free and having spare money is being able to buy new books if I want :j

As I was reading it I kept thinking of some of the threads on the OS board particularly "Preparedness for when". Being a prepper seems to be much more usual in the US then here. I do think it would be easier to be one in the US. Lots of people already live off grid and live reasonably self sufficient lives.

"A. American has been involved in prepping and survival communities since the early 1990s. An avid outdoorsman, he has a spent considerable time learning edible and medicinal plants and their uses as well as primitive survival skills."

He certainly knows his stuff if this book is anything to go by. If the End of the World happens I'm hoping I'll be in his neighbourhood in the US :D

While I wait for the next one in the series - Surviving Home - I have 2 Bernie Gunther books to read and also Demolition Angel by Robert Crais.

    Enjoy whatever you're reading :)

Has anyone read H is for Hawk? There's the £5 voucher code on ebooks at Sainbury's and I'm debating whether to get one reasonable quality book or 5 easy reading ones for when I go on holiday.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Quality every time. Life is too short to waste it on stuff that doesn't matter, or make you happy.

I'm reading this, whilst fascinating it's also getting me down so I may have to stop reading it altogether:
