Did you receive an invoice with all the T&Cs?

Sorry, i see now in the order email that there is a link to log in and view the invoice,
and it does say at the bottom of that:

"Conditions of Sale: Goods are not sold on a trial and return basis. If you are unsure of the suitability of a product you should check with a member of the sales staff
before purchase. Any goods ordered specifically for customers are not restockable. Box Limited will not refund on unwanted items, other unopened, unused goods
returned for refund are liable to a 25% restocking fee at the discretion of Box Limited. There are no exceptions unless order falls under Distance Selling Regulations
or the Sales of Goods Act. Full Terms and Conditions and Warranty information is available on our website at *cant post url"
  • Hi everyone.

    Just a quick update.
I received an email friday, asking me to send them a photo of the screen so that they can assist me. I took a photo and emailed it to them, (although it was hard to take one without interference from refresh rates, and it isn't overly clear in the photo).

I haven't used it other than the initial use, and to take a photo of the screen, so as to keep it in as an unused a state as possible.

However, i thought given that it's a saturday, and i had more time available i would try and spend some time getting a clearer photo of the issue.

So i turned it on today, and while setting up the camera the screen seemed to flicker (one half seemed to go black/dark then the other side ) almost like an old flourescent bulb turning on, for maybe 4 or 5 seconds, then it stopped and the screen was normal. Then thought it was best just to shut it down as i don't want to do anything that might damage it,as i dont really know what was going on with the screen.

I'm still waiting for a reply regarding the email i sent friday with the photo.
but i was wondering how i should proceed now?

    I read PcMgarry's reply saying
Do you have a local independent computer shop that could give you an unbiased opinion?

Is this something i should now do, as it seems there is an issue with the screen?
or should i email the company updating them?

    thanks

    ...and the screen was normal.
So are you now saying the screen is just as it should be?

I thought I'd replied to this thread already but apparently not!

OP, does a screenshot pick up the grainy effect? Or does it only show up when taking an actual picture of the screen.

I'm no expert in computers by far (so don't take what I say as gospel) but if it shows in a screenshot, to me that would imply software/settings related. Where if it only shows in an actual picture, that would suggest hardware.

And fwiw, I have a 17" cube chameleon - picture is crystal clear full hd. Paid less than half what aleinware of lesser spec would have cost. 2 years later and *touch wood* still running likes a dream.

  • unholyangel, thanks for your reply. I've got to say, none of the reviews i ever read mentioned the screen quality being an issue. I mean, the screen is worse than my dads oldish (about 3 years) budget asus which is 1366 x 720, and cost almost half the price of the cube. and with how it looks, it seems like there is something wrong with it, the best way i can describe it, is if you get a smear on your phone, how the pixels seem to shine different colours in a dotty/grainy way.

and, the fact the people who have seen it have said it looks so out.

Is it ok for me to go on it, to do that, I'm just a bit hesitant about using it more than i need to.

But, it's actually not very obvious in a picture either, i've found it really hard to get a decent photo that reflects how it appears when viewed. The best i could do doesn't really show it.

i thought i would put the picture here.
it is not very obvious at all in the image.
the text looks slightly soft, which is how it looks in person.
but in person the grainy look is very apparent and almost glistens, which cannot be seen atall in the pic

It used to be important (under the sale of goods act) not to do anything to goods that was inconsistent with the seller retaining ownership as it could mean you've accepted the goods and cant insist on a refund (only a repair/replacement). But under the consumer rights act, you're given a blanket 30 days in which to reject goods for a refund with no caveats over acceptance.

If you are unsure at all though, ask the retailer first - after all, its not going to affect me in any way, just you so if you don't feel comfortable doing it, dont :)

I was going to say the effects you describe (i think i know what you mean, like when you spray liquid on a screen and wipe it, you get a sort of multicolour glisten/smear?) does sound like hardware to me but well, as above, I wouldn't class myself as an expert (we do have someone who repairs laptops for a living though....fosterdog perhaps? so maybe they can shed some light).

That is exactly how it seems, and is most prominent on the white (like a url bar or google) and it makes text quite straining to read. *edit* just thought id add, the two people who saw it, both asked if the protective film had been left on as it looks like that too*
i'm not sure if my photo really shows much though

I'd really appreciate any input or thoughts on it.

Thanks for letting me know about your experience with cube though, I feel a bit more relaxed about it as i was getting a bit worried!

I've recommended them to family & friends before and then went on to make purchases for them via my account. Only had problems once but a phone call and a few emails later and it was all sorted - they were helpful and not awkward at all (as some retailers can be). I wouldn't expect them to bend over backwards offering you the sun, but from my own experience, I wouldn't expect them to try and get out of their obligations either.

I was a bit worried the first time ordering from them also - especially reading their T&C's which aren't entirely legal (but quite thats common unfortunately). But quite a bit of digging later and I was convinced it should be fine and paid on credit card just in case it wasn't!

And thats also a tip for you. If buying goods priced more than £100, try and pay directly (not via paypal for example) by credit card. Even if its just £10 of the balance - it gives you equal rights with your card company as you have with the retailer (and if the bank reject your claim, you can refer it to the financial ombudsman - which costs your bank but not you). Did we ask how you paid for the laptop?
