The post office do a check and send service for £9.75. They will confirm that you've filled in the form correctly before its sent to the passport office. I've always thought it a waste of money but if you're struggling with filling in this form this service could be an option to use.
  • The staff are only doing their jobs, so it's a bit much to be calling them muppets. Did you ring up to ask for advice on what you need to do?

That would be section 9 you're talking about where it says

"Name, if signing on behalf of a child"
    "Relationship to child"

I can see how that could be confusing

Except that the OP stated what the boxes said, and it was not that; so, presumably, you are not talking about the same form.

I can see why, if you were desperate to jump on the bandwagon and try and make yourself look clever, you might not have bothered to read the OP. ;)

You leave it blank.. It's if you are filling in the form as a third part for example if the intended passport holder is unable to fill in the form themselves.

There is only one passport application form, you just fill in the appropriate sections. And there is only one box to sign if it's an adult renewal, it's all there in the guide that comes with the form.

    Renewal - Adult Sections 1, 2, 3 and 9.
Section 1 what kind of application
    Section 2 Your personal details
Section 3 Details of old passport
Section 9 The box where you sign.

    That's it.

So it's ok for the OP to call the "creatures" that work for the passport office muppets ?

    I don't believe it's against forum rules?

Muppet seems a good term for people who can cannot design a simple form without leaving an ambiguity.
You also failed to address the OPs issue of not being able to fill in a form that the majority have no problem with

Who decided he couldn't fill it in?

He's complaining that it's ambiguous. And why it's important to get it right.

It should have been a simple matter for one of the geniuses that responded to explain why it isn't ambiguous.

Instead they've just said or implied that the OP is an idiot without 'showing their working', and made themselves look like a rather mindless rabble.

It's a pity the OP does not seem to have returned since starting the thread to explain further (although his post seems crystal clear, to me).

The form isn't ambiguous in the least, the guide tells you before you start exactly which sections you need to fill in.

Well, I haven't renewed my passport for a while, so I can't speak from experience, but given the lengths the OP went to to make his post clear, it seems odd that the wording he claims is on the form is completely different to that provided in the link above.

I agree that the wording in that link is clear and unambiguous so it's hard to see how anyone would get that wrong. Maybe the above is an on-line version and the OP is using a paper version? Maybe he's got an old version that has been replaced because they realised that the wording was ambiguous. :D

The form has been the same for years (I've been filling them in every 5 years for children's passports) Maybe OP got it from a post office who had had it in the back room since 1972! ;)
