Carphone Warehouse have a discount code, EXTRA20, that gets you £20 off the phone. I'm going to buy the 64gb for £599 with it

Buying from CPW and most likely other places results in your SIM being locked to the first carrier you insert to your phone. Buying from Apple is permanently unlocked.

Apple has 0% finance offer if you want to spread costs over 12 months to slightly burden the extra £10-50 you probably will pay.

Thanks all. Just to correct one point made above, if you buy from Apple direct you only get a one year warranty (I've just spoken to them and confirmed this). You can only get a two year warranty from them now by buying an AppleCare+ extended warranty.

So far, John Lewis is the only place I've found that include a two-year warranty for free. Although CPW have the £20 discount, I might still go with John Lewis for the warranty (£20 for an extra year isn't bad)...

I'm not worried about it locking as I keep handsets so long that they're not worth anything second hand by the time I get rid of them. :) My 4S has a couple of slight chips in the casing so trade-in sites are offering me £0 for it anyway. :D

The SSD inside the 6s has more in common with a fast laptop than a mobile phone. Still doesn't make it cheap, but you can't compare it to, say, a £15 64GB USB 3 flash drive which is 3-5 times slower.

Thanks! I hadn't considered that, and you're right. Yes, I was thinking about the cost of 64Gb USBs/SD cards these days. ;) Fair point (and will at least make me feel better if I do fork out for 128Gb).

Maps shouldn't take a lot of space either.

1:25000 O/S maps of large swathes of the country do. :D

Reportedly, the practice is different from what you've been told.

    Good point.

I've managed to order on Amex to get reward points and balance transfer to AA 22 month card for no fee.
I'm getting a 10gb data sim with unlimited minutes and texts and selling my 5S to magpie. Whole thing works out at about £30 per month (across 22mnths) to get that which is really good.

Bit of work but I'm not paying the prices that operators try to tie you to anymore

There's a minimum two year warranty across the EU - that's the law. Different governments implement this differently, but two years is the minimum. In the UK the limit is six years, five in Scotland.

What Apple are quoting is their "Apple one-year limited warranty" which is separate and additional to these statutory rights. FWIW Apple were fined €900,000 in 2012 for this practice of trying to upsell AC+.

In practical terms - you may need to jump through more hurdles to exercise your statutory rights, whereas the 'one-year limited warranty' or the two year warranty offered by the likes of JL is normally a quibble-free process.

Update to this - Carphone Warehouse accepted the order at £599 then processed it at £619. When I phoned to complain I was told they could give me a £20 voucher to spend at their store which I declined.

Then they said I could send the phone back for a refund and then place another order.

Clearly I don't trust their ability to enter the right number in again so I'm going to reject delivery of the item tomorrow at the door so it just gets sent back.

I've ordered the phone direct from Apple using corporate discount which gets me the 64GB 6S for £607 and it's unlocked already as stated above.

    What a palava.
