Look at the power outputs not size(torque profile is also important) .

    What's yours 70bhp ish

the newer range of small engines are chucking out 100+Bhp and the petrol tubo's have much better torque characteristic.

Plenty of nearly new next size up well specified motors to chose from, Diesel preference but the petrol not far behind so not to be dismissed.

For 30k miles I would be looking at goodies/comfort, climate, parking sensors, cruise, fully integrated audio/satnav/phone...

£10-£15k will get a stonker of a car that will be good for 100k over 3 years with good maintenance.

Go a bit older and you will find something in the £8k-£10k.

Your issue may be insurance if you go to big/powerful.

Make sure the job is working before committing to the next vehicle.

if i was doing thirty thousand miles a year in a car i certainly would not be buying one of the town cars or super minis that are being suggested here

I would be looking at a full size car probably a 2.0L turbo diesel that will return 50 plus miles to the gallon on the motorway and offer a bit of room and a bit of comfort along the way

a BMW 5 series 64 plate sub 20K miles and change from your 20 grand budget, A merc, VW, Audi, skoda or a mondeo with a 2.0L turbo diesel is the size of car i would be looking for to do my thirty thousand miles a year

My neighbour is disabled, as am I, and he has just bought the same model, loves it. This will give you the durability, economy, relaxed motorway driving and reliability you need.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
