I have run my own car for work since 2000.Prior to that co cars. I do anywhere between 8000 and 14000 business miles per year. My current car(Volvo V50) bought new in 2009 for£15k possibly worth only 3k now with 123000m on it. The previous car was an Octavia for which I paid £4.5 and put on 150000m, prior to that a 1.8 Golf paid £3.5k again ran for 5 years and 150000m. The Octavia cost me19p per mile all in. Not sure about the Golf.
What I did do was set up a standing order of £200 per month from my expenses claim which enabled me to replace each car with no borrowing.
If this job is new to you I would bide my time before borrowing money for a car to meet my new employer's needs.
I suggest you look at spending around £6 to £8k running that car for 3 years and see how your new job goes.
It would also be sensible to find out what your new job type and big miles will do to your insurance costs. Also if you move to the city what effect that will have.0 -
I often drive a C1 1L essentially same vehicle OP wants to upgrade from. Use it on 150 mile round trips. Amusingly, once I get it up to the legal max motorway speed, I sail past much larger cars that I presume are concerned about their fuel consumption so taking it easy.
It should be fine for OP to happily carry on with the Aygo, at least for the first 6 months while acclimatising to the new job and while in the trial period. If the employer is making some implicit demand that your vehicle is client-worthy, then they should have some financial assistance available.
Oh, and if a salesman turns up at my house to do a quote on a home project, I'd be positively impressed to see them arrive in a compact, economical vehicle.
I think a lot of the 'what car should I upgrade to for my mainly personal use' questions are folks trying to justify a more prestigious vehicle to themselves and to OH.
A colleague of mine years ago had a Picanto for driving from Peterborough to East London.
Did it for years. Don't know what engine was in it, probably wasn't huge.
There is the caveat that the OP was probably going to change her car soon anyway and the new job and longer commute at higher speeds is now just the final push needed to make the leap from thinking about it to doing it!0 -

Makes sense for the OP to do this.0 -
I would suggest the volvo v40 - safest car in the world! I had the d2 cross country and got around 50mpg. I didnt do much motorway driving though but its a great car. Mine was a lease car and i was gutted to have to hand it back.If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0

Or save some money and get a Focus.
Though the Volvo version will be a nicer place to be, no doubt of that.0 -
23 years old and you can insure a car for 30000/year plus business use for only £400? What insurance company is that?
