What size engine do i need?
Hello there, i'm seeking some car advice help.
I currently have a Toyota Aygo 1L and although the car itself is fine, i've just started a job which requires me to be driving a fair bit on dual carriageways and motorways, i've noticed that once my car gets to about 55mph i have to floor it a bit in order to get acceleration. Thus i've come to the conclusion i need to get a bigger car (both generally and engine size wise)
This will be my 2nd car, i'm 23 and my budget is up to 20k - unsure about whether i'm going to be leasing it or buying it yet i'm still doing research
Problem is i don't know what engine size i'm going to need, i'm thinking either 1.4 or 1.6 but other that supercars (Thank you Top Gear) i know nothing of cars. Insurance won't be too much of a problem as i'm paying under £400 currently for fully comp

You do not need such a massive budget, that's more than a house deposit!!!!!!Hello there, i'm seeking some car advice help.

I'm thinking a used approved kia ceed here for 7-10k. Good MPG find a 3yr old used approved from dealer than the 7 yr warranty applies.
Or a Skoda fabia, vw polo again 2-4 yrs old service history dealer used approved 8-11k.
Insurance WILL be a factor from a 1l aygo to anything else I can assure you.
I suggest you start running dummy quotes on bigger more powerful cars than an aygo and watch the £££ start to rise!(emptying your web browser cookie cache before you get each quote)!.0 -
I'd say a 1.2l petrol would get the job done if what you want is a car that can get you, on your own, up to 70 in a reasonable amount of acceleration time without adding too much cost (Puntos and Polos for example).
If you want to do "70", plan on regularly having passengers, or if I have underestimated what "a fair bit" means, then that's probably not enough.0 -
Size of engine isn't the only consideration.
Especially with the current trend towards downsizing petrol engines and then having a turbo.
You could have a look at the new Aygo.
Or move up to the Yaris.
As already said a 1.2/1.3 normally aspirated engine would probably be fine or a smaller engine with a Turbo.
The TwinAir in the Fiats has always had bad reports as far as economy goes but then the journalists driving it might have been thrashing the life out of it.
The EcoBoost 1.0 might be a better bet.
At 23 I would still have concerns with Insurance cost.
I wouldn't spend all you £20k budget on a depreciating asset, I have done that, many posters on here will have done it, likely many times.
If you go on the CarGiant website they have a section that lists performance for each car, Road Fund Lic cost, economy and also typical Insurance group.
All for each car.
That will make it a little simpler rather than darting from site to site checking for those details.
You can also have a look at how much power and torque they have.
I have watched a few of the Carbuyer car reviews on YouTube and they seem pretty good to be honest.
Unbelievably left field choice of the week would be a C4 Cactus! With the smallest petrol engine, 1.2.0 -
I'm looking at buying brand new hence the high budget0
-
For that budget and driving type I'd be looking at a 1.5/1.6 diesel Fiesta/Polo/Ibiza dependent on your preference for looks or badge.
For example, even a top of the range Titanium X Fiesta can be gotten for under £15K brand new.0 -

seconded, avoid the twinair. I ran a 500 0.9 twinair for the last 3 years, economy averaged 42mpg over 3 years and 52k miles against the quoted 70mpg
The reason I bought it was it was congestion charge free so worthwhile for that, but not for economy bei a tiny petrol turbo the instinct was always to give it the boot.
Driving on tne M1 at 60 using the accelerator like there was an egg under it you could just push 60mpg but it was exhausting to drive like that
Replaced it with an Abarth 500 and ironically now getting better mpg in a much faster and more fun version of the 500
So avoid the twinair if you want decent economyOver 100k miles of Electric Motoring and rising,0 -
1.4 150hp petrol COD Leon/A3/Golf/Polo or similar in 150hp 2.0 Tdi
Don't buy new buy nearly new.
I am not convinced on the durability of the 1l high output engines.
You don't really explain what your other needs and wants are though. Or miles covered.
The what car site has a useful comparison tool.0 -
I'll be doing approx 30,000 miles a year inc business miles. It'll be mainly me only in the car with the occasional passenger, i currently live in the country but i am thinking of moving closer to work which is located in a city, but a city till wouldn't be useful as my job does sometimes require me to drive to other places in Essex or London0

For that I would go with a diesel. Thats a lot of miles. Make sure you test drive any car on your shortlist at least twice. Check for comfort and ergonomics. If you are serious any decent dealer should let you have an unaccompanied drive for at least a couple of hours.
I would also look at a Volvo V40 D3 R design or basic SE. SE would be my preference although R Design has a sportier image. Comfy, robust, economical, fairly fast.
or the A3 150 tdi sport.
You will find with those miles lease costs are huge.0 -
I was looking at Volvo yesterday, base model is over 19K however0
