Just thought I'd add that if you're happy with the Toyota brand, dealers etc, and on that budget, you're into brand new Auris territory ...0

Doing 30k miles will make your new car worthless in in 5 years, I'd be buying a nearly new car from the likes of motorpoint, another point is you will be in the car for a large part of your life, you could get a little luxury0

A Mazda 3 you say?
I've got 7 years NCB, live in a low crime area and low insurance risk postcode, I am 26 YO and pay over £400 a year with Aviva (including protected NCB).0 -
Have you considered a Mini? A bit expensive but very stylish. My son has just bought a new Mini Cooper ....1.5 l., twin turbo petrol. I've had a ride in it and was very impressed. Within your budget.0

What does "driving a fair bit on dual carriageways and motorways," amount to? How many miles will you be doing?
When I was 23 I used to commute weekly down the M1, around 100 miles each way, in a 3 litre 1.0 petrol Suzuki Alto.
You don't NEED a bigger car/engine but I can understand why you might want it - my focus would be on getting something that can return good MPG so you make the most of that fuel allowance they are paying you, the Kia Rio might be worth a look. If they pay 45p a mile you might be able to "pocket" 35p+ of that as a good efficient car will cost less than 10p a mile in fuel.
Of course you will have other costs, insurance, tax, depreciation, servicing, repairs etc to think about, how many miles you are doing will be a factor.
If you buy new then you will lose 20% of the cars value in the first year, probably more.Make £2018 in 2018 Challenge - Total to date £2,1080 -

My little, cheap as chips, 1.2L 3 Cylinder VW Fox is on the A1 everyday with a bike on the roof and still does ~43mpg, ~52mpg with no bike/rack on the roof

Not as refined or as economical as the wife's Golf 1.6TDI Bluemotion but overall way cheaper to run as no cambelt changes, much cheaper servicing, way cheaper tyres [they never seem to wear unlike the Golf...], insurance etc...0 -

Vauxhall Astra Excite 1.4 - I know! Irony intended
But if they make cars that are so anodyne that they need to offer 40% off to shift it - it would be rude not too. £11K for Cruise control AC Electric Front windows.I think I saw you in an ice cream parlour
