and as you clearly state YOU UPGRADED from WIN 7/8 to win 10 , in the original post the OP stated that they wanted to upgrade from XP

so your comments regarding upgrading are not valid.

a:you upgraded via the correct path
b:I never commented on memory in my first reply

  • I've just checked the Medion website, for confirmation that the E1317T Netbook will upgrade.

I know mine will, because it did, but mine has been upgraded to 4GB of RAM.

The website confirms the E1317T will upgrade, so I think we can be fairly sure, that 2GB of RAM is sufficient.

however the OPs question was about upgrading from win xp on a "I have an old Dell Inspiron 1011, currenly running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3, with a 1.60 gigahertz Intel Atom N270 processor."

what has this ton do with the medion machine you mention?

I came in on the discussion, in reply to your comment:-

"and as per niftydigits posting , there is not enough memory for it to run"

I'm demonstrating that it can run on the OP's machine (see my post 8) and that the OP's machine can be upgraded to 2GB of RAM, which is what the E1317T Netbook has, straight out of the box.

The E1317T Netbook also has a lesser processor (1.2Ghz) than the OP's machine.

Come on lads/lassies, stop bickering about who said what, where when and nit picking over a bit of ram.
The issue was upgrading from xp and that is not possible via Microsoft upgrade software. A clean start is required and having a 64 bit prog on a 32 bit machine just will not do.

So questions already answered for OP.......So.......
Can I extend the question to ask for advice and a good summary of a huge number of posts regarding win10?;)
There are a lot to wade through and I find I miss the real points if I try and understand them all. A succinct resume will do us all a service.

I already run xp pro on a 32 bit 2GB (max) machine but really need to upgrade for both security and compatibility reasons (new software/updates). I suggest there are many in a similar position.
What is the best option to move to Win10?
I rather think along the lines of a complete new machine (currently hotchpotch large PC of the desktop variety and I have no wish to move to a laptop as use tablet for portable computing and Pc for more serious activities, DVD burning, video editing, audio editing, pix etc.) Could really do with a good budget machine (money saving remember) but realise speed is crucial for the video tasks. Current pc is fine except for the latter! I have loads of software installed, probably some will not work on win 10 and all hardware (really like me) knocking on a bit so upgrading parts probably not a good idea, especially as most of it will need changing owing to age etc..

In a nutshell, what should people like me (I suspect there still are quite a few of us) do. Cannot bury my head in the sand for much longer.......:rotfl:

    upgrade or replace?

    upgrade:
buy win 10 licence or buy/beg/steel a win 7/8 licence , run that then do the Microsoft upgrade to win 10

    buy new:
see hundreds of posts asking "is this a good computer"

CLEARLY state in which direction you want to go , then people can assist more

Thanks John, very succinct. :T :) Do wonder if that might be the easy option, but am concerned it may be costly to replicate what I have - number of drive bays for example (2 hard, 2 CD/DVD readers/writers -some seem to have limits on audio handling) and several USB interfaces all in a nice big box for any expansion......so I need a bit of advice as to what is currently available at reasonable cost! Ballpark figures would do at this stage to guide my slow head!

You are right Pappa. A clear direction given your options would be ideal, that is where my problem lies, deciding just that!

I am not against a new drive (keeping the old one as backup) and using your upgrade option but I do not know if I will have performance issues when on win10 compared to the old xp. Is 10 more hungry on resources and memory (already slower than I would like with vid edit) and how can I check current software/hardware is compatible?
If I knew the answers to those then I might have a chance deciding necessary direction!

Windows 10 isn't too bad in terms of using resources and memory. It won't fit into whatever small amount of RAM was originally specified as the minimum for XP, but give it 2GB and it should do a decent job, I reckon.

Even 1GB isn't too bad, although if some of that was used for video memory then I would expect bad things - certainly that was my experience with Windows 8.

In terms of checking compatibility, I don't think there is a Microsoft-supplied Windows 10 compatibility checker which would run on XP. The nearest is the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant which is here:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/upgrade-assistant-download-online-faq

But beware that Windows 8 and 10 aren't quite the same, and drivers and software which work in Windows 8 may not work in Windows 10. Also some hardware which runs 64-bit Windows 8 won't run 64-bit Windows 8.1 or Windows 10.
