Upgrading to Windows 10

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1011, currenly running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3, with a 1.60 gigahertz Intel Atom N270 processor.
I have been searching and apparently it is possible and even makes the old machine run better. However, I am asked for either a 32-bit or 64-bit download, and I chose the 64-bit.
After a 3.7Gb download, the file cannot be open for reasons unknown.
Am I wasting my time or does anyone have any helpful tips?

But the problem (in addition to having to fork out for a Win10 licence) would be that the hardware in many old XP machines won't have drivers compatible with Windows 10.
It's not impossible, and indeed I have succeeded in upgrading machines which originally came with Windows XP all the way up to Windows 10, but it wasn't straightforward and there's no guarantee it would work for you.
There's also more chance that drivers would exist for 32-bit than 64-bit, so I think the odds might be slightly better with 32-bit.
But the main issue is needing to buy Windows 10, personally I think Microsoft's pricing for it is too steep to make it worthwhile.
Edit: Is it the same machine as this one? In which case there seem to be Windows 7 32-bit drivers, which may be good enough for Windows 10, in 32-bit at least. (But no guarantee!)

Looks like your CPU is 32bit:

The main issue with those machines is this. Once you've done that, upgrading the OS is child's play. Machine will become useful again.0

I refer to my answer to the OPs posting
"After a 3.7Gb download, the file cannot be open for reasons unknown"
the file cannot be used for upgrading win xp , however if this is burnt to a pendrive or DVD ,and run as a boot device it may run
and as per niftydigits posting , there is not enough memory for it to runSave a Rachael

Actually, not true.System requirements
Processor:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster processor or SoC
RAM:
1 gigabyte (GB) for 32-bit or 2 GB for 64-bit
https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows/windows-10-specifications#sysreqs
Also, the Dell Inspiron 1011 can be upgraded to 2GB of RAM.
BTW. I have an 8" Connect Tablet, running Windows 10, and that has a 1 Ghz processor, and 1 GB of RAM.0 -
currenly running Windows XP Home Edition Service
Really? I thought all these devices shipped with Windows 7 Starter? How did it get downgraded to XP? .0 -

the page you refer to states clearly that this is an upgrade from 7/8 and not win xp
ok , you tell niftydigits he is wrong
the op has simply stated that the file cannot be opened , they have not stated what program , they have used to open it?
also worth noting is that although a tablet may very well run win 10 , it uses a different version than the 32/64 bit systemsSave a Rachael
