They're allowed to make the role redundant Ruby, but generally avoid making anyone redundant on maternity leave as they have to be able to prove that it's the role and it has nothing to do with your maternity/return to work. Most employers try hard to redeploy staff on maternity leave as a result.

As far as I know it is illegal to make people on maternity leave redundant, Sugarbaby. However as work did it when I was discussing my return, that apparently is allowed :(

I should receive my settlement tomorrow, at which point I can call my debt management company to ask whether I could pay off some (or preferably all!) of the debt I still have - that would really be a load off my mind. Then I need to look into which benefits I'm entitled to, presumably not JSA as I'm not actively jobseeking at the moment.

Hope everyone has had a very fab weekend :)

Hi Ruby, you need to be a bit wary about your entitlement to any Benefits if you are receiving a settlement. In your eyes your settlement is yours to do as you wish, but it would need to be declared that you received it if you are claiming Benefits. If you choose to repay your debts with the money, this may also prevent you from being able to claim Benefits, as you would be expected to use the settlement for everyday living costs whilst you are trying to secure a new job.

A friend was refused Benefits of any kind, because it was felt that she had spent an inheritance from a dear friend unwisely and if she had not, then she could have had a few more years when she would not have been eligible to claim Benefits. She is currently going through a lengthy Appeal.

Wise words from greenbee and sugarbaby about the redundancy ruby. I know from my line of work that while it's legal to make the role of someone on maternity leave redundant it's not quite that straightforward. I believe that if there was any suitable alternative in remaining roles then you should have been given precedence. Do you have a CAB in the area where you could ask the questions particularly about the settlement and benefits?

It's still lovely and sunny and mild here. The last four months have been really glorious. DH and I had a lovely few hours on Saturday walking in local parkland and stopping for a light lunch. The autumn colours are really beautiful.

I'm having a bit of a pampering session today. I put some deep conditioner on my hair, filed my feet and did all the usual creaming. I think I'll try for a chiropody appointment later in the week as I think I'm just ready for one. Have also decided to give my nails a rest from shellac for a month or so. I think Ill have it removed at the end of the week, cut my nails short and try that Barry M product. They should have time to recover by Christmas ready for the party season.

Dancing tonight. It's the one day of the week where I plan what to wear around a skirt. I think it's getting cold enough for a winter weight skirt now so I'll give it some thought. Do you ever wear trousers/jeans sugarbaby? I just couldn't remember you describing any?

If you're reading LL, hope you're starting to pick up. Focus on YOU!:)
  • Good morning all.

LL sorry to hear you've not been well, hope you are on the mend now you've had some rest.

Rubyslippers, sorry to hear about your job, not helpful timing, hope you can find something else without too much trouble.

Sugarbaby, hope the hospital is more helpful than the locum was with your cyst.

I remember my Dad being told a lump on his knee was benign and he was very frustrated - it might not have been cancerous, but benign was a very unhelpful description for something that was causing him a lot of pain and limiting his mobility. The first specialist advised doing nothing unless the pain got very bad as he was were worried surgery might cause other damage to the knee. A year later he was having difficulty walking and in constant pain, saw a different specialist who was confident he could fix and concerned it had been left so long. He was so much better within even a couple of days of having had the surgery. Just wish he had got the second opinion earlier, might have saved him a year of pain.

I had some good news last week - the MRI scan revealed I had some bone wear in my foot in all the places I have felt a little bit of pain this year (it's been quite limited and when doing specific things only) but he said it was pretty normal for someone of my age who walks quite a bit. If it gets bad they can look into some sort of treatment, but he said best to just avoid doing the things that really hurt - which is quite easy to do. One unusual yoga position on holiday which we don't do in my usual class and wearing higher heels (like over 3 inches) which I hardly ever do. (Those higher shoes can go to charity now)

Had to have pest control out for another treatment for the bed bugs last week. Was told by a different pest control guy I called in despair that I should have been advised that I couldn't move out of my room during treatment - the bed bugs can go into hiding without food and live for a year without - but if you are in the room they will emerge and get caught by the poison. So I had to just accept I would get bitten the night before the treatment and take my hay fever medication to minimize the reaction to the bites. Even wearing leggings tucked into socks and a long sleeved top they managed to crawl inside and get me. Anyway, good thing is I haven't seen any sign of them after the treatment - no more blood on the sheets - so fingers crossed they are now gone.

Gradually starting to unpack my clothes now. Putting any summer ones into ziplock bags to give me a bit more space in the wardrobe. It gets so full that clothes end up getting crumpled after being ironed in there.

Been out training in the park this morning. Despite having not done much of my usual exercise recently I don't seem to have gone too far backwards, guess I have spent 10 days hiking and done 5 days of yoga, not quite like lying on the beach and stuffing myself whilst on holiday.

Am quite looking forward to being mainly at home the rest of the year (as in not on holiday rather than spending all my time in the house) but will need to get some trips in the diary for next year to look forward to. One of my hiking chums is thinking of doing the Inca trail next year and if we could get a group of us together for that I would book that and then plan everything else in round it. Am away hiking in Worthing this weekend with my hiking friends so we might get it planned then.

Did a bit of shopping at the weekend, got a new cardigan in East - petrol blue Merino long line with some flecks of different colours in it. Should go with most of my teals / kingfishers. Got a velvet top in teal in Next, gather velvet is very much in this year and I do like a bit of velvet. Also got some smart navy trousers in Next for work - I have lots of good quality smart jersey tops and so some trousers to wear for work would be good. I did have my eye out for any dresses suitable for work as some of mine are past their best but couldn't see many with sleeves and none in colours that would flatter me. Ordered some cashmere and merino blend jumpers and a longer cardigan this morning - the jumpers are fitted and fine gauge so think I could wear for work as well as casual usage. Other than that am on the hunt for a couple more pairs of trousers - camel, chocolate or khaki would be good, and then I think I should be sorted for the winter.

Right, better get back to work, got a facial later and suspect I will be feeling too chilled afterwards to do much useful then.

Have a fab week all x
  • Good Morning Ladies,

I had an eventful weekend. I found a small lump in the side of my left breast. I felt so terrified, I could not talk to anyone about it. Monday morning I contacted my Doctor's and explained about the lump and about how I had constant, intense pain in the cyst on my back and it had changed in appearance and was larger.:(

I was given an emergency appointment with one of the female Doctor's and she was brilliant. She was able to tell me that the cyst was infected and the infection had spread to a lymph node in the side of my breast causing the lump and so she prescribed me 5 days of antibiotics. I was so relieved that the lump was also benign that I was suffused with joy. :j:j:j:j

I had a serious talk with Wayne on Sunday evening in the pub and he has promised that he will never treat me so carelessly again. I agreed to try again, but I also said I want to take it slow and see what happens. ;) I had such a fun evening with him, that it was the first time in the weekend that I could stop worrying about the lump and the cyst for a few hours. :T

LL I hope you are feeling somewhat better today.

Maman I never wear trousers or jeans, neither are flattering on me.

Have a good day Ladies :D

Quick post to say how relieved and delighted you must be to know that it's only an infection sugarbaby. Thank goodness you had a good practitioner and diagnosis so quickly. Hope Wayne can be as good as his word going forward.:)

Just a quickie....can't tyoe much due to shoulder pain but still reading.
Just wanted to say I'm glad you're ok Sugarbaby. What a relief for you.

Can't say I am very impressed with the treatment you got first time round but thank goodness your second practioner was on the ball.

Same with you Indy.... your poor dad being made tosuffer for a year. That is poor.

I have to say I have practically zero faith in the NHS now. When it is good it's great but when it's bad it's dire. It's just pot luck which you get, good or bad and it really shouldn't be like that.

Been to Physio this morning, still struggling with leg and shoulder pain so I had better stop typing now.
  • Hello Ladies,

I returned to work today even though I knew it would be painful to do the cleaning. I do not get paid if I do not work and the 2 weeks prior were non working weeks as the College where I work was closed for half term. I am a single parent, so I need to work when the College is open in term time.

I am aching all over and the cyst on my back has changed again. I am getting my children to take photographs so that any Doctor's that I see can know for a fact just how much the cyst has changed since it was first diagnosed last Tuesday. It is the infection that is causing the changes, but I still feel they need to be documented.

As my eldest sister died form secondary stomach cancer and I have one older brother with skin cancer and another older brother with cancer of the throat, but who is thankfully in remission, any lumps that appear on my body need investigation. I do not hesitate to go to the Doctor as early detection of any cancer would always be best.

I am very tired, but if I go to bed before midnight I will wake up in the middle of the night and I will not be able to get back to sleep. I need at least 6 hours sleep a night, but am even more alert and focused when I have 7 hours sleep.

Take care of yourself ladies. :)
  • Sugarbaby, how awful about your family, you are quite right to get everything checked out ASAP. My friend had breast cancer last year and has since had her ovaries removed too (she has the 'faulty gene') - as her mum had had it many years ago she went to the GP straight away when she found a lump, and it was a good thing she did as her cancer was caught at an early stage. I hope the infection can be dealt with quickly, it must be a struggle working when you are in pain.

We had bedbugs a couple of years ago indie and what a pain they were!! Ours were brought in by the lodger's daughter; she stayed with him every other weekend and her mum never treated them at their home, so she just kept bringing them back :( we had to have the rooms treated, move the drawers from under the bed into the loft for over a year, and wash everything from the wardrobes at 60 degrees. We also clingfilmed the base of the bed, if that's something you could try!

Thank you to everyone for the advice on my settlement and benefits, my debt management company have asked me to contact the CAB for financial advice before I do anything. I don't think I'd be entitled to JSA regardless - as I'm not actively job seeking and our household income is probably over the threshold - but I certainly don't want to lose out on anything I am entitled to

I'm determined to re-start with my weight loss but finding it hard at the moment, the boys are very demanding and I don't even get chance to do my workout DVDs now, they don't sleep for long enough! Plus I have to eat most meals standing up as they won't leave me alone for long enough to eat anything. OH of course doesn't notice this - he is full of the dreaded man flu at the moment and is moaning like there's no tomorrow.....
Finally debt free!! March 2018 :j

Hi Ruby, are your boys weaned? I will presume they are and you are introducing new foods to them all of the time. Are they feeding themselves yet? It would be much better for the boys and you if you eat with them. It is always best to put young children in their own high chairs around the family table and you sit with them. Give them lots of different finger foods if they have not yet mastered how to use a spoon. They will learn from watching you use a knife and fork or/and a spoon for your own meals. Standing up and eating is not good for your digestion and you may not be absorbing the nutrients from your food effectively either.

You need to establish a good bed time and nap time routine for your boys, so that the boys body clock will then want to sleep at approximately the same time each day. Sleep deprivation causes havoc in babies as well as adults.

The same goes for your workout DVD's. You should involve the boys if possible so that they see you working out as a normal part of the day. Even a 10 minute workout will be of enormous benefit to you if you are doing it daily.

I was a practising Level 3 Nursery Nurse until about 18 month's ago, but I will always be a qualified Nursery Nurse even when I am not being paid to use those skills and that experience. I was also the Project Co-ordinator for a healthy eating project for young women many years ago. Just saying to reassure you that I am not just 'talking out my hat'.
