KonMari 2016 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Morning to all.
Pollywollydoodle is right, sometimes real life steps in and stuff get piled up, pushed in a corner or cupboard and sits there laughing at you. If the basic structure is in place underneath what seems like a huge task is completed in minutes. :j
As I've just moved house I thought that that the upheaval would be so stressful. It wasn't that bad because I have things corralled in containers and boxes already. It was just the case of putting them in bigger cardboard boxes and transporting them to the new house.
Once here I opened a cupboard and place the containers in. Everything is still sorted and together. True I need place them in more accessible places to suit the house and me but everything is tidy and easily found.
When I started this kodoing I had just moved into our last house a small 3 bed cottage and I mean small, from a 4 bed house. We moved with a huge removal lorry and extra container towed on the back.
I had stuff and furniture piled up everywhere.
I read the original thread on kodoing and started small with my undies and went on from there. I blitzed everything in about 4-6 weeks.
That suited me but other people take longer and do a drawer or room at a time, that’s fine.
Now I have the life I always wanted. Tiding up is a breeze takes minutes a day. Cleaning I mean really bottoming out a room takes half hour to an hour. All because there is very little to move to get to the nitty gritty of the job.
Sorry this has become a small novel.
Stick with it folks it's worth it in the end.

How do you cope with crafting? I have many serious and loved crafts, spinning, knitting, sewing, wood carving etc. Everything for these crafts is tidied away in storage boxes, except if I am using them, when they stay out. My spinning wheels are small and gorgeous and stay in my living room, my sewing machines are on a desk in my sewing room. Everything gets used and none of it will go. The best I can do at the moment is de-stashing ie fibres turned into tops, hats, scarves, presents. Fabrics are all washed and neatly stacked in layers in cupboards or hung on hangers in a cupboard. Is there a magic way for crafting? I doubt it, not when I love my crafts and am so productive.0

But, Kittie, remember it's about 'sparking joy'. So if your crafting stuff sparks joy (as it does) then that's fine - it's recognising when it doesn't and (worse) doing something about that it becomes tricky.
DD is back to uni tomorrow with all of her stuff - there always comes a point where we both feel it's time for her to go back. We have got to that time. I have realised that we need a plan for when she comes back permanently (for the foreseeable future anyway) in the summer - i just can't have all the stuff she has strewn about the house and her room won't accommodate it all.
Last summer we piled it all in the conservatory, but that won't do long term. I guess it will be a case of crating up what we can and putting it in the garage and then finding room for the rest tidily (:rotfl:)I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -
Kittie- they are bringing joy so it is just a question of keeping them organised.
I try to organise into 'zones' e.g. Sewing, knitting, papers, adhesives, paints and colouring media. Within those I try to organise by how much they get used so things used most are easiest to get to. Most of my zones have shelves with really useful boxes for storage and some open shelves with items that are useful and beautiful on display (a mixture of glass jars etc with beads and other beautiful items). The paints etc I use most are in tiered cake stand things so they are easy to move to my work area. I also have a couple of cheap acrylic lipstick stands from ebay with some paints on so I can easily see the colours.
I make swatch books for pen colours, materials etc that are kept in boxes so I can easily see what I have and find it. I keep ideas folders and a journalling folder. Stamps, small embossing folders and embellishments are in project life clear folders in 12x12 scrapbooks. Large embossing folders in a magazine holder.
Fabrics are konmarie folded on shelving. Patterns are filed and because I use lutterloh I have a rail where I use trouser hangers to hold my pattern overview/instructions with the pattern pieces. If I am mid project I will hang cut out fabric etc there as well.....
I'd better stop there....spot the art and craft addict (I actually feel like a real nutter as I write all this....not at all MSE but I used to be lucky enough to be on a decent income and this was my indulgence (no drinking or holidays etc so we are pretty frugal and indulge a bit in our hobbies. Now, having retired very early on health grounds money is very tight and I am trying to live off the stash!)2019 fashion on a ration 0/66 coupons0 -
oh thanks both of you, I needed that. I was feeling a bit guilty because I have so many crafting things. VJs, about bringing joy, yes double yes and jellie I really could not live without my crafts. They keep me stress free, as much as anything could.
Ahhh, back to knitting with the radio on and a nice cup of real coffee0 -
I started putting my socks together using the Kon Mari method. It looks so much neater than the old method. My friend thought I was bonkers when I showed him how amazing it looks.0

Been clearing out old emails over the last couple of days as it had got to the point whereby couldn't see what actually needed to be responded to. Still 100s more to go but it's feeling so much better. Unsubscribing from shop marketing emails as they come in.
Also starting going through recipe file and have picked out some to make which will use up older ingredients.Decluttering Awards: 🏅🏅0 -
I was slightly horrified when I went to look for some fabric before Christmas for a project and realised just how much I'd got - it's almost all free/recycled but I need to stop buying/acquiring and using some of it up! I use plastic crates which fit in a built-in cupboard to corral fabric, patterns etc and under-the-bed drawers also hold some. What I'm finding more troublesome are the ribbons, trims etc. I've got a vintage wooden sewing box that belonged to my mum, which holds day-to-day tools and supplies.
I completely agree though - sewing and knitting are what keep me sane and seeing my equipment sparks joy, as long as its not taking over the room.
PS Jellie I had to Google lutterloh as I'd never heard of it!Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.0 -
oceanspirit - I've been clearing out email as well. Unsubscribing or moving stuff to new (more secure) email accounts. I desperately need to sort out my work email, but that can wait0

Started wonderfully gung ho but stopped after part of the clothes. Serious anxiety & issues @ work - honestly.
But now I will start again.
Knickers & socks are still perfect & DH loves the arrangement (incidentally - he has 70 pairs of socks )
I intend to have a clothes purge next weekend when DH is at work - but there is an ulterior motive....
We're both really, really fed up and are at the stage we just want to sell up & booger off. So Kondoing will be perfect for this process.
I'm heading off into the spare room shortly to tidy it up so there is no guilt in enjoying Kondoing next weekend - and yes, there is an open charity bag that is being added to as I go
But - I have 2 rather random questions.... can anyone help?
Shredder - I need one - can anyone recommend one? There are many papers to be shredded once I get to that category & I have Amazon money available - all suggestions would be gratefully accepted.
Northern Cyprus (I did say random) - I'm sure there is a poster from N Cyprus on one of the threads I read but I can't remember her name - I think she only moved out there in the last year or so. Does anyone know wqho she is?
Anyway - enough for now - I'm heading into the spare room - please send help if I'm not out by 6pm.
Re Northern Cyprus.
Is this the thread you mean?
