I bought myself some new mugs before Christmas as several of the others I like had been broken. We tend to have around 3 drinks from a mug before it goes in the dishwasher. The new mugs I've got are pale blue inside and out (Norfolk Blue by Waitrose, there's posh!) and they seem to show the tea rings in our horrid hard water area far less than my other mugs, so I'm getting more use of them before washing.

ETA the potato ricer has turned up, was in a different cupboard to where I previously kept it. I did check the cupboard but for some reason didn't see it. At least we won't be eating potato smoothie ever again.

No real organised KMing here other than a quick sweep of decs as they went away - just 2 broken ones got rid of and 1 non-joy-sparking put for CS. Wasn't expecting much as I had a big clear out of them in 2015.

Some other random bits n pieces have been discovered during the normal course of life - worn out clothing from DS2 and DS3 for rag recycling and a determined effort to actually use some Xmas scented candles over the festive period has meant a pile of tealights and 3 jarred candles are no longer with us :D

Hopefully I can get rid of some more paperwork when I start tackling annual accounts next week :)

:) I've studied textiles at college and have occasionally been employed making some very strange things. One thing which every single pro sewer I know seems to have arrived at independantly is the superiority of the F.Roche oblong box as a storage method.

Last month I found one on the floor at the tip. Unbroken! And a pal gave me two of them at the weekend, sadly empty, but still utterly joyous. All three are now in the sewing cupboard holding things. I loves me a FR oblong box, I does.

VJsMum, grinning at the proliferation of crocks caused by a dishwasher. Gonna share a little RL story.

Once upon a time, there were two women who were friends but had very different lifestyles.

One, we shall call her A, was a working mum with hubby and three kiddies who ate at home seven days a week. The other, we shall call her B, was childfree, she and hubby worked full-time and used to eat out a minimum of twice a week for their evening meal, the only one that they were home for, apart from breakfast.

Woman A gets a dishwasher and really gets good use from it. Woman B gets a bit envious and decided to get a dishwasher herself, even though she didn't need it.

Because B and Hubs used so few dishes, it took them nearly a week to accrue a dishwasher load. They used to run out of crocks, and cutlery and pans. So they brought more of all those categories. And life got more complicated and cluttery due to the 'labour saving device'.

I've also observed that families who used to squabble about doing the dishes manually now squabble about loading and unloading their dishwasher; the doing of it at all, or the doing of it correctly.

  • Interesting - I have about twenty mugs, yes I live on my own but I often have visitors and occasionally have eight or so people in the kitchen if I'm hosting a meeting. I re-use mugs two or three times usually. If I cut down to one mug, it could be washed up quickly but it would take me a long time to fill the top rack of the dishwasher, the bottom rack fills up faster with baking stuff, pans and so on. So I think I'll hang on to my mug stash! I also like different mugs for different things - big Cath Kidston one for the first cup(s) of tea, smaller one for morning coffee and small bone china ones for herb tea. And exactly what makes you think I've got OCD? :rotfl:

I didn't know about the FR boxes. I loathe them but I'm sure I have friends who've had some this Christmas, I'll have to ask around.

:D Last Xmas I asked at my workplace if anyone had any FR boxes going spare after the celebrations, could they give them to me?

My normally generous workmates reacted as if I had asked for their firstborn children; good luck on prying FR boxes out of relative strangers.

I don't have a dishwasher (indeed, I barely have room for a kitchen in my kitchen) so One Mug Rules works really well for me; just kicking myself for not having adopted it before.

Are we related polly? I have a large Cath Kidston mug for my morning cups of mint tea and a very old botanic garden mug for mid-morning coffee. My family laugh at me as I can't drink tea from the coffee cup, etc!

I must ask about for the FR boxes, what a good idea.

I have just KD DD2 birthday. It gave me a lot of joy and i was tidying up the left overs it was nice reflecting what a fab family I have. Quite strange that my girls and my parents expect me to have a family tea party on their birthdays but not for their other cousins/grandchildren despite me being the JAM parent. Saying that, we are always one of the family's that turn up with an alcohol contribution!. I always set a 'time' but other than the start time the latter is usually ignored!

Sister and me were doing our usual dig at dad as he was sorting his plate of pork pies, sausage rolls etc. to take home for his supper whether he was allowed or not! Mum double checking that she could not help wash up despite me telling her numerous times i was off tomorrow!

'We' were brought up to have our own opinions but to also respect those of others. I still remember a time having to explain to DD2 when she was small that even though Gdad and me sounded very cross with each other over we still loved each other! It is times like this that I wonder if my children will realise what a strong happy bond we have.

I used to have a FR box for my sewing kit, but grew out of it and there were cluttery bits in the same drawer surrounding the box. On a sweep of that drawer last year the sewing stuff was moved to a Costco frozen raspberry box which is about 3 times the size of a FR box and is now doing the job very well. The FR box went in recycling (sorry GQ).

I'll be taking my Christmas decs down this evening (cards went in the recycling bag this morning). We had a gift box of preserves in a small box, that nearly went last week, but I changed my mind at the last minute and I'm sure by the end of today will be holding delicate Christmas decs in a larger box.

I don't know if you recall the cup and saucer my MIL insisted on giving me last year. Well it was put in place on the dresser when she came to visit. Did she notice, did she heck. But then she sat in the lounge for 3 hours before noticing we'd decorated a wall (and believe me, it's a bright tropical print you can't miss, the wall was pale blue before) and I had to point out the curtains were new also.

So the cup and saucer will be winging their way to the CS soon.

A gift I was given last Christmas I've never used was passed along yesterday to somebody who I know will use it, so that was another small success as it's been sat causing clutter on a shelf in the hall for several months.
