KonMari 2016 - The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up

Happy New Year everyone!
May 2017 be filled with all things good for you all.
And may all the carp be rehomed appropriately, even if that sometimes means the bin.
My sole resolution is that my future shall contain no rubbish/clutter/junk whatsoever.
From now on (brave words) I shall be looking at each object in two ways only:
a) to see if it brings joy and
b) to ask myself does my future require this item?
Hopefully this double filter will do the trick.“All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.”0 -
Anyhoo, on to joyous things - happy new year everyone!!! Is it only me or do most kondo-ites want to tidy the xmas decs away right now? :rotfl:
Yes me, and I never used to be that way. Decorations only went up a week before Christmas this year. Cards will probably come down this evening or tomorrow so OH can have a look at them before I cut them up for gift tags or shopping lists but decs will have to wait until Friday when helper comes so they can be put away.
Mavvy, sorry to hear you've been unwell. Lolly sounds a little character. Hope she gets well again soon too.
Hello and welcome to Chrystal.
Going to tackle my desk after lunch today just to clear some space to enable me to get more important things done later this week.
Have been making an inventory of food in the kitchen cupboards to use up plus vitamin supplements (had previously binned any not usable so unfortunately nothing else to go for now) which will create a bit more space. Really looking forward to the next couple of weeks and getting rid of more things from my little home.
Bedroom curtain pole has fallen down - it was lovely having curtains for two weeks so hopefully that'll spur me into action and get it sorted.Decluttering Awards: 🏅🏅0 -
I'm at the stage where I can decant my sorted wicker drawers into the pine drawers as there is space there. BUT I love the wicker drawers. I bought them with my savings and Christmas money in my late teens. I still remember going to the shop (now closed) over the course of a year to make sure no-one bought them!
I think earlier in this thread I mentioned we needed some temporary storage for dd1 clothes so might initially use them for that but then what goes under the stairs?
My problem at the moment is where to put my plants and joyous display items as the drawers to put them on are rapidly disappearing. I'm even struggling for somewhere for the printer! I don't want to keep surplus drawers as I think they can become a breeding ground.Don’t put it down - put it away!

I happily re-purposed my cd drawers and they now contain diy tools. Very easy to find the items, very accessible ( ie not in toolbox under CoD), and I have a reasonably attractive piece of furniture on show - the drawers are tall and narrow but really strong, in a sort of rattan finish. Wish I could remember where i bought them because they are great quality!
I just want to give a shout out for my new, joyous, coatigan. It is so warm and I love it :jI have changed my work-life balance to a life-work balance.0 -

I've put my printer on what was previously 1 of a set of 3 nesting tables. It is only big enough for the printer, so doesn't gather other kibble.Smiles are as perfect a gift as hugs...

Happy New Year to all MK practitioners.:)
I've not posted in a while but pleased to say that all my clothes drawers are still amazing. I just love the ease and pleasure of picking out a top or a scarf from the rainbow of neatly folded items. Kitchen cupboards and drawers are still improved but need to be done again but it'll be easier second time around.
My main reason for posting is that I can't wait to get rid of the Christmas decorations and they only went up on 19th! I've resolved that this will be the last year of a real tree as I'm heartily fed up with needles. I've made a note to self to look out for a good artificial one when they come into the shops. Best thing is that, having cleared out an under stairs cupboard, the decorations are going to be stored there rather than in the loft so will be far more accessible. I'm going to get rid of some bits that I haven't used for years and I'll need different storage boxes when I find something suitable.
Don't you just love the optimism and energy that a new year brings!:D0 -
You never know they may have some in the sales Maman!Must use my stash up!0

I had to come on here as I have done something very similar, due to changed circumstances. I bought a wooden scandinavian tree this year, basically dowels and a star on a base. Then I filled it with glittery and hm ornaments and put a few things around the base. It has been stunning and far exceeded my expectations. It has all packed away into a very thin box, held together with rubber bands and everything has gone easily into a single bed base storage area. I can no longer cope with difficult storage. It was a fab decision
Anything I have MK has stayed neat and sorted, need to do more though0 -
Had an 'interesting' tea last night. I think I may have Kondo'd the potato ricer. The mashers (x2) went a while ago as we had the ricer, but we hardly ever eat spuds now , so I think I may have got rid of it. Had MIL over for dinner, went to find the ricer and couldn't find it, so I used the stick blender instead. Not the best ever result, the 'mash' had the texture of a smoothie!
This morning, I forgot to put some items in the washing machine, and couldn't get the door open as it had started the cycle. Had a rummage through the drawer to try and find the instruction book. Couldn't find it but found several others for things we don't own any more so they went. Plus the recipe book that came with my 17 year old oven which I've never used, and didn't even remember I had it. Plus a similar book for a microwave we don't own anymore.
Have made a new year's resolution - don't put it down, put it away. The KM story in this house will continue this year.Make £2025 in 2025

Some charity shops sell artificial Xmas trees in the run up to Christmas. One manager I knows hoards them in the shop's store-room and puts them out a couple at a time in November and December. Will typically be selling about 60 of them in those few weeks.
I'm having a lazy day at home as will be back at work tomorrow and it will be full-on. I'm in process of putting all but two mugs onto the top shelf of a kitchen cupboard, the one only really accessible using the step-stool, even for a tall person like me. This is designed to keep them out of easy circulation and to control the washing-up.
It's really only one mug in use as the second mug goes to-and-fro my office on workdays and normally lives in the dedicated work-bag.
I am processing a wonderful snarled up tangle of lovely wool given by a friend yesterday (we were in the yarn stash in her loft, woo-woo). Turning these oddments into lengths for the rug-making project which I'm working on now. Lots of colours and she's happy because she's releived of a niggle and knows that I am using the stuff, having seen the rug-making in progress. Win-win.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
