mav .......having flasbacks of walls of tinned food in hall cupboards now. I can understand, but it seems such a waste. 6 binbags and 19 shoeboxes is a fabulous amount to get through - well done both of you!
dragonette I have to own up I never had anything to do with the 19 shoe boxes :o Dad had been doing random sorting of the 1000s of photos over the last 6 months or so.I just sorted out random stuff for the chazzers 1.5 bags as Dad already sorted out 1.5 binbags of puzzles to go.

The other bags were full of just old rubbish which had outlived its time in the flat.

Dads Flat is massive even with the storage yes it could be redesigned but I am not sure I would. Its not at all cluttered as everything is in the cupboards so you would think oh what a lovely uncluttered home :rotfl:There is yet another cupboard in the hallway where spare Tins, washing powder, toilet rolls and 8 rolls of binbags and 8 rolls of recylcing bags, etc etc live which has shelves like a larder would have had. They put rubbish outside the door in bags as there is no where for wheelie bins to go.

Its an old Victorian hotel converted into 5 flats and only 1 other flat is lived in full time the rest are holiday homes (which you are not allowed to rent out under 1 year). So no holiday makers in and out.So you can put 10 bags of rubbish out at a time and a pick up twice a week.:rotfl:As its in the conservation area which the town is known for.

I am going back in Friday do do the Narnia cupboard ;) Wonder what the heck is in those boxes :rotfl:

Have a lovely joyful day all

Well the cookery books have been reduced. Got 11 to go with me to my group on Thursday to see if anybody wants any of them, the leftovers will go to the charity shop. I've ordered some bookends from Amazon to see if I can keep the remainders upright on the trolley so they are easier to pull out, however I think some of them may be a bit too tall to stand upright. Also purged a World of Wine large hardback book OH bought. Who on earth refers to such things?

Dining room table is now clear, so I'm about to tackle my most hated business job, putting through my personal expenses. They've built up since last May. Could be more than a 1 day job......

Small victory: the soap-and-shampoo stash has diminshed so that it all fits into one container. I have rearranged my bedside cabinet where they all live, and now the sewing machine fits in there as well. The sewing machine used to live in the guest room cabinet, blocking any guest from using the cabinet. 'Guests' usually refers to my parents, who stay at least one week at a time, so it is nice to have a cabinet they can actually use.

Edited to add: have just realised that I could probably fit the soaps, body lotions and shampoos (all hotel size) in the bathroom drawer, and it is true! Now I have a spare lidded plastic box left and more space in the bedside cabinet. Hmmmm, what can I put there, so that it is out of the way elsewhere?

  • I've come back to paper which I have been procrastinating over for a long time. I've done bits but I feel there is more I can discard. One thing I'm struggling with is the paperwork from buying my flat. It's a big pile of letters, survey, search reports, lease extension confirmation etc. Can anyone advice what I definitely need to keep please? Thanks.

Bedroom is looking joyfully decluttered. I chucked out two non-joy sparking toiletries this morning.
Living room, on the other hand, is a sea of paper with me like an island in the middle. I'm a bit worried about setting off a paper avalanche and suffering death by a thousand paper cuts. :o

I had intended to clean the fridge tonight but couldn't be ar$$ed, will have a go tomorrow and probably get a better result as the lights in our kitchen aren't great.

So I tidied my OH's tie drawers which also involved binning a load of spare buttons, safety pins, odd cufflinks boxes and bits of clut. All ties are now nicely rolled and all of them are visible. I resisted the urge to bin a load of cotton hankies which he never uses, but did bin 4 hideous ties I've never seen him wear.

  • Allybee, its most likely that the lease extension etc is all recorded at the Land Registry. I would work from the point of view of 'what would I need if there was a dispute or if I wanted to sell the flat?' So (although it's probably recorded elsewhere) it may save you time in future to keep anything that details restrictions or covenants, in other words anything that might arise in relation to your neighbours. I'd also keep anything like Building Regulations or planning permission because it may be useful when you come to sell at a future date and have to answer questions about the property.

I'd also keep the survey just in case any problems come up that you think should have been picked up by the surveyor. After six years you may as well ditch it though, as you're probably out of time to sue them! Letters aren't likely to be important.
Life is mainly froth and bubble: two things stand like stone. Kindness in another’s trouble, courage in your own.
  • Fab, thanks PollyWollyDoodle! I will go through it later this week and sift out the unnecessaries, I am done for tonight. The heaps have been replaced by a stack of relatively ordered papers so the paper avalanche has been removed. I need to decide how I'm going to store them, probably a box file but needs a little think.
I've also got a tray of shredding, a large carrier bag of non-sensitive recycling and a bag of general carp for the bin. A load of laundry has been folded and put away.
It's looking so much better in here.

My only problem is that I've been reading the Minimalists' website and it's making me dream of uncluttered spaces and bare surfaces. I'm not sure I'll ever achieve that! I like to have some decorative pieces, pot plants etc, but there is something a bit addictive about those clean lines.
Currently I'm just trying to tell myself that my home looks a million times better than it did just over a year ago. Slowly, slowly, catchy monkey and all that.

    Hope all are well.

    :) Morning all.

I've been a bit MIA due to various things, basically working and kondo-ing. Got an after-work appt with someone re the electrical work due here next week, so wanted the excess Stuff fetched back from the parents down to the chazzer beforehand.

Did a chazzer run with three bags after work yesterday, and went to my pal's with a wally trolley-load and have rehomed a lovely pair of curtains and some yarm, so have been spreading joy like an out-of-season santa.

Oooh, and the charity I donate to (gift-aiding) has sent me an email thanking my for my repeat donations, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, bless.

My ideal would be a sparsely-furnished home with copious cupboards, so the the necessaries could be well out of sight and only the artistic things, or the things immediately being used, would be out. Alas, not going to happen in this home, you can barely swing a small kitten in here even when the place is unfurnished.

mavvymoo, I was very taken with your father's shoebox of photos of people he doesn't know. Most of us have some of these. Wouldn't it be fun to have social gatherings and swop these pictures?

We could play games such as I advance you the Mysterious Lady in Edwardian Blouse with Cameo Brooch against your two Naff Family Groups with 1970s Haircuts and Colour Distortion.

We'd all end up with Pictures of People We Don't Know, but we would have refreshed our personal holdings. And future family historians could work themselves into a lather trying to puzzle out who these people were and who they were related to.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
