...Just out of interest, as I d/l at 48x on old CD's, could this be a reason some of the old CD's struggle as it's an 8x drive?
Assuming 48x was writer speed then there shouldn't be any problems except writing at 8x is obviously slower. In fact writing at a slower speed on a slow PC could prevent problems when writing.

If when you ring them you say you have tried a friends writer and it works ok then when they come out they may just do a quick swap of the drives without any kind of testing due to them being in a hurry or something.

I'll just have to tell them, the friend tested it, as I'm not hot on computers, so if they ask me to elaborate, I'd be stuck :rotfl:

Won't do for a while as I don't overly use the drive, so when I'm ready to use it again, I'll call them as if i call before 10am they come out next day :)

    Thanks!

I've just noticed that my CD Drive has changed from Q to D since the defrag - is this a problem and why has it done it?

On the older Windows (9x/ME), Windows would assign the any hard drive starting from Drive C:, and any cdrom drives would be assigned drive letters immediately after the last harddrive letter assigned. I can't really explain why your drive letter has changed except try it now and see if you have any problems with writing.

So when the pc world man put your new slower drive in, did he install new drivers and uninstall the old drivers? I cant see how he could put a slower drive in as surely they must replace it with the same or better drive.
There must be drivers on the new software disc he gave you.
In Nero when you click on choose drive in the menu it has the maximum speed of the drive ,my DVDRW is 40X but I think that is for CD writing,CD reading and DVD reading,I think it writes DVD's at only 8X so 8X is what is written on the DVD drive.
It will only be able to write to the maximum speed of the disc you put in anyway.

Run everything possible, defragger, scandisk etc and it's the same trouble. Turned it off for an hour, burnt some video onto CD, it even recorded.......but would not close it, got stuck at that stage and now when I put the CD in it doesn't recognise it :(

    Very frustrating

He only put the drive in, he didn't install anything and didn't leave any software. It was literally a straight swap drive for drive, he left nothing. I didn't even see the make of the drive, I only assume it's Samsung as that is what my PC says it is.

The reason he downgraded was probably because that's what the PC came with, the original replacement was an upgrade from the guy that came, but this guy decided to give us back what we started with.

The TDK's are lower speed than the 8x it says it can record at.

I'm going to check the old Samsung manual I have found, I'm getting the feeling my PC still thinks it's got the old Drive in...

Optical devices shouldnt need drivers. Simply plug and play like HDD's.

Well, the firmware loaded up this time and found the drive and it's recorded a Video CD.

What the CD doesn't do, is play very well, keeps stopping, starting, getting stuck etc etc.

It seems to record CD's on first startup of PC and then it's like, when it gets to a certain point (a few minutes after PC startup) it won't do it :(

This could be due to your computer running slow due to loads of programmes running in background or the laser is on its way out.

I may have already mentioned this (can't remember) but restart your computer and after waiting for everything to load, close everything down except systray (like you did when defraging) and see if that helps towards playing back CDs and/or the writing problem(s).
