CD Rom Drive Problems

Argh!
I'm trying to get some of my pictures off my hard-drive onto a CD.
It reads the items from my hard drive, copies them, but gets stuck on 'preparing to write track'
My CD Rom drive is temperamental, it's been replaced twice but it will only read some CD's not others strangely and it often gets stuck and I have to re-start the whole PC to get the CD out.
I don't want to go through the whole rigmarole of getting someone out again. All I want to do is put some pics onto CD, I barely use it otherwise
Thanks for any advice

input....input.....need more input.....
What CDROM is it? Make/Model and firmware version if known.
What type of discs are you using?
What software are you using to burn? Version number if known.
What operating system are you using?
Looks like its having problems writing the lead-in, once this happens the cd will not be able to be ejected until after a reboot as you say.0 -

Okay...
CD Rom - Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-308B
Discs - TDK CD-R80's
Easy CD Creator 4.02e (318) Did have 5.0 but when PC crashed, had the default one back, cannot find the 5.0 disc so using 4.02e
Operating system - Windows? It's Millenium Edition0 -
cool, what computer is it? Is it a Dell or a HP?

The firmwares are in this link but it depends what the p.c is.0 -
It's Packard Bell, do I want to risk d/l something I know nothing about...0

Even easier if it works.

Samsung has a live update for firmwares. Not sure if it will find anything for the SM-308B as its not mentioned on the Samsung website.
Try it and see if it does, make sure you DO NOT have a disk in the drive when updating firmwares.0 -
If the live update isnt any sucess I would try this one.
ftp://ftp.nec-computers.com/pub/itemnr/REFFIUP04490300/SM308B_fdT101.exe
You will need a floppy disk to do it.
Other options 4 u -
Try Nero instead of Easy CD Creator 4.02e
Your TDK's should be ok, certainly not a poo media.
Is your HDD nice and fast? If its not the buffer may be too low to do any writing. Defrag should speed things up.
How much RAM you got?0 -
Thanks for the advice!
Is Nero expensive?
My HDD is fairly slow to be honest, I will need to defrag I think, may try that.
RAM is only 1920 -

I have a disc of NERO if you want it.
I since got a newer version with my Pioneer 109
PM me your address if its any use to you.0 -
I hope it's not the case for you, but I had similar problems with a Samsung Combo drive and it turned out that the drive was duff. Combo drives aren't recommended anymore due to these kind of problems.
I replaced mine with a CD burner as I didn't need the facility to play DVD's on my PC, I had a standalone player.
You can get a DVD burner now for around £30.This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!
