If I had to walk 8 miles to work, I'd be incapable of standing once I got there.

Are Uber cabs in the area?, there is a £20 off code doing the rounds on HUKD.
  • Every NHS Trust I have worked in provides a free minibus/taxi for staff on Christmas Day/Boxing Day if they can't get in! I feel sorry for minimum wage retail workers. Working public holidays for no extra pay being treated like crap by managers and customers alike.

Phone in sick to a job, at such a time of year will lose you the respect of your colleagues (and managers), as it is an obvious skive

Next time you want to swap shifts / need a favour - forget it - as they know you have shafted them over and they have had to pick up the slack for your behaviour

Don't forget that no one wants to be there - no one. Skive off, and it is just making it so much worse for everyone else

I'd ask work if they could cover taxi fares. Even better if you can get everyone affected by it to also ask. Last year and the year before they refused to pay them, we pointed out that as most of only work part time it was taking a huge chunk of our wages (especially if you had 5 finishes in the week that required a taxi) and that surely if they were going to put us on instead pf those who drive, knowing there was no public transport would they consider paying. It worked. They ended up paying for the last few this year and have paid for all of them this year. My manager even rang around a few taxi companies to get a cheaper quote for boxing day (though thats probably because when i looked into it it was going to cost them £80 all round for boxing day  ).

  • This reminds me of when I broke my foot. I could have in theory, got a taxi to and from work as I couldn't use the tube. But it would have cost at least £50 a day. Half my salary gone on taxi fares! Instead I was signed off by my orthopaedic consultant.
