I dont! Some of my friends aren't tech savvy like me
I'm working myself on BD but starting at a more sensible 9am. Plus my work is two thirds of a mile from my parents and be walking it unless it's pouring with rain.
I never understood the need for some retailers to open stupid early on BD. If they all reverted back to normal hours, customers are not going to be that bothered. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Have you got a streetlife where you live? There may be someone local who would be able to help ( https://www.streetlife.com)0

Without wishing to sound too harsh, it does sound like a mountain is being made of this particular mole hill.
Its a retail job. At Christmas. Boxing Day sales and the requirement to staff them are not exactly "unexpected" events. Yes, it's unfortunate her Dad has broken his foot, but such is life. It's one day; take the hit like anyone else.
I would suggest ringing a taxi company well in advance and pre-book, and negotiate a price - that way there are no unexpected charging surprises.
My employer didn't really get overly concerned sending me overseas for each of the last two Christmasses. But it comes with the job. I knew it, they knew it, life continues! If s/he uses a bus the rest of the year, just think how much extra she is taking home compared to her poor colleagues who are stumping up for a car, insurance, tax, weekly petrol and on-going maintenance.
One day, taken completely out of context with the rest of the year sounds a teeny weeny little bit over whiney.
Regards

Has your friend a drivers licence? If so could she borrow her dad's car for the day?0

I don't think it mentions how 'vocal' she's been with her unhappiness about the situation.
If she's been complaining and 'showing her hand' then she's in a bit of a pickle.
If not, then she should be able to pull a sickie.
I remember being forced into working Christmas eve along time ago now.
I already had plans to meet a large group of my friends I'd not seen in ages and didn't want to miss out.
I pretended to be really pleased with working, though.
''Excellent! I could really use the extra money and I don't have any plans...good stuff!!''
Then when I called in sick, there were no suspicions or repurcussions.
I really can't believe that someone actually thanked that post. No wonder some employers lack trust in their staff."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0 -

Maybe so but the bottom line here is that they are quite entitled to open "stupid early" if they so choose.
I suspect somewhere in your friend's contract is a requirement to work at such hours if required. Generally how somebody gets to work is not the employer's problem.
So, in the absence of union negotiating muscle or begging successfully for special treatment, her options are to either get herself there of face a disciplinary for an unauthorised absence.0 -
The two options I immediately thought of when I read the OP (which other people have already suggested are):
1. Riding a Bike
2. Asking a college to pick them up on the way
Number 2 is the easiest option and I can't see them not being able to find a colleague to drive an extra 16 miles for £10.
But from the sound of it the OP they are looking for a way to convince their manager to get the day off. So is this more to do with not wanting to get up so early than not being able to get to work?0 -
