  • Could be a good day to 'get sick'.
Seems ridiculous to actually lose money by going to work for the day.

A lot of stores expect their staff in very early on Boxing day for setting up sale stuff and removing Christmas merchandising and stock.

I remember years ago a well known department store chain used to have a security guard on the staff door after closing on Christmas eve to ensure no staff left until all the sale stuff was set up-staff tended to be released anytime from 7pm to 11pm depending on department. I was there as a concession worker - with no sale on Boxing day and it still took me insisting the security guard got the personel manager down before I could leave (and I wasn't even their direct employee)

A lot of office 9 to 5ers really don't appreciate how different retail is

While a nuisance you have to view this as an annual figure. Over the course of a year that one taxi journey won't add much to the commuting cost.

Being hard nosed one could equate it with a car driver waking up and having a puncture - "should I go to work when a new tyre will cost me £60?" Yes.

"My car service and MoT will cost me £500 this month - I don't earn that in a month! Should I just not go to work?" No.

They are transport costs that you suck up because you have to - and try to see the annual transport costs, averaged, not the individual days.

Her employer isn't helping out with this.

Then what would happen if she were inconveniently unwell that day?

Is it fair that someone else should have to work boxing day because your friend can only get a taxi?

Id be well and truely miffed if I had the day off but then it was changed because it was inconvenient for whoever was due in.

You can look at this from every side, but ultimately if its in your friends contract of employment then there is very little that can be done unless they can find someone prepared to swap shifts.

Apart from deceiving her employer and colleagues it won't end nicely for the friend if she has already been vocal about not wanting to make the journey..

Have you got any friends that you could have a favour from to give you a lift? Or are you in one of the uber areas that could get you there possibly cheaper? Other option is biking it as I know you said it's an a road I think it was but there aren't going to be that many people going anywhere at 5am boxing day

Could you find a taxi company whose fares are not regulated by the Council.
or ask a work colleague if they could pick you up and you will give them 'petrol and a bit.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Yes checking the contract of employment is a good idea. What does it say about working hours?
