Earning less than taxi fare

Is it unreasonable for a shop worker to earn less than what they have to pay in taxi fares to work Boxing Day? Her employer isn't helping out with this.
A friend will be about £15-20 out of pocket. Needs to start work at 5am. Her council have set triple fare before 8am, double fare rest of BD. Not getting any more pay or a day in lieu.
She doesn't drive. Her only relative that drives, her Dad, can't drive at moment as broke foot earlier this month. All her colleagues live in the opposite direction.Walking not an option as a stretch of an A road has no pavement and she lives 8 miles. No buses are running, which my friend always uses to go to work
There are other colleagues that live closer or have access to transport aren't working BD.
How does my friend try to convince the manager this? If any of you say she should leave her job. It's only one day.

Could she speak to one of her colleagues? Either to ask if they will swap and cover her shift while she does one of theirs?
Or if they are also working if they could pick her up, I'd go out of my way in that situation
It's not the manager's issue to sort out0 -
You're right its only one day which is why she should suck it up and just pay the fare, she'll still have a job the day after and its only one day. Its a real shame but its really not her employers fault or their problem that she needs to get a taxi."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0

I remember a hotel worker having to splash the cash on a taxi at least 4 Sunday's per year when it was wedding fair time once upon a time so feel the pain, how about trying other relatives and neighbours?
Do they have long service? or was this used last year? I had a friend who also use to get protection though that was before def the supermarket became a major and then they moved feet within the store so now repaying colleagues back big time I'd bet!
Short of now hoping for sickness, trying to recoup the losses later in month, I'd have tried to find another job long before now if things are that bad. Sorry.0 -
Does her contract oblige her to work on public holidays?0

Boxing day (assuming OP means Sat 26th) isn't a public holiday.Voyager2002 wrote: »Does her contract oblige her to work on public holidays?0 -
Asking a colleague to cover is the obvious route. It's not the employers problem if an employee lives a long way from where they choose to work.0

What sort of shop needs it workers to start at 5am on Boxing Day? (says she typing from the comfort of her bed at gone 11am!) That seems the unreasonable bit to me.0
