Why are peole asking for directions exempt? Do you think that street scammers are above pretending to be lost in order to distract your attention from what they are really up to?
  • All vendors complete a training period and sign the vendor code of conduct. This is made up of the basic rules to which they must adhere whilst selling the magazine, including no begging, no drinking, no swearing and no harassment of the public.

My local one swears and harasses practically everyone that goes past...most of ours are eastern european and never have any change or can't count the change correctly, so that puts me off.

    I'd call that street entertainment.

Then you should take their badge number and report them. Most Big Issue sellers are polite people, most are members of the community who know everyone because they stand on the street every day.

That's been my experience as well, in Blackpool (which seems relevant to the thread) and other towns/cities.

I have to say though, I actually like Blackpool. We will be there again with the kids in October for a few days. Kids love it, and the "bracing" sea air is always soul cleansing lol

Ive always found Blackpools residents to be a pleasant bunch, traders as well. I dont think Ive ever been hassled by the games stalls and if Ive been asked to play a polite "No Thanks" always suffices.

At the end of the day Blackpool relies on the tourist industry, so setting out to alienate them wont really gain anything will it? And lets be honest, for what it costs for 5 days in Blackpool with a couple of kids you could have a fortnight in Spain!!

Thanks OP for posting this and reminding people how con artists work and how we all need to be on our guard.

I would ignore the posters who would definitely never fall for this themselves - I guess we all think that (I certainly think I'd never be stupid enough to fall for these things) but isn't that what these con artists rely on??? I bet you thought you'd never be a victim too?

Watching 'The Real Hustle' has been an eye opener to me too as it seems normal people can, and are, taken in my tricks which look so obvious in hindsight or through a TV screen!

Good on you for having the courage to post about it as many wouldn't (partly for fear of the reaction some have given here, I fear) - another thing that helps these people con others!!! :T

All very true, but unfortunately, scammers owe allegiance only to themselves and whatever profit they can make. They certainly don't look at the impact their behaviour might have on anyone or anything else.
  • I think I know of the guys you mean. They offered me a free game to try and get me hooked a couple of years ago. So I gave it a go for a laugh, they tried to tell me that by taking up the free offer I had committed myself to playing with cash until I won. When I walked away without falling for the scam, they started racially abusing me and threatening to throw my two year old daughter into the sea.
    What horrible people
