Im no expert but arent 1 series Beemers bad news with regard to timing chains and tensioners?

All of the older 2.0diesels are suspect.

Though my mates daughter has a 116i and I have driven it a couple of times and the engine is as rough as a bag of spanners. With less than 50k miles on it.

No the old 2.0d was just a crap engine.

    They did improve it.

But it is not a case of if your camchain goes wrong but when.

The engine was simply poorly engineered.

A bit like the oil pump in 2.0diesel VAG cars.
  • Well if these 2.0TD Beemers are bad news per-se I have read horror stories all over the net, I might just keep my Clio until I can't bear it any more.

Been eyeing up Golf's, I can get one a couple of years newer for the same budget.

Surely their 2.0TD offering can't be so bad. It's been around many years...I know there is the so called emissions scandal.

how big an issue is this N47 engine problem?

the N47 is BMW,s biggest selling diesel engine and from 2008 to 2011 when the biggest problems were encountered they made hundreds of thousands of the N47 motors

what percentage of this huge number of engines failed ? yes any number is to many but there are hundreds of thousands of these motors running every day that are not giving problems, but you only hear about the ones that go wrong on the internet and not about all the others

what about the VW bxe engine that had a reputation for throwing a con rod through the side of the block isn't this just as big a problem as the BMW N47 motor?
  • Well I suppose any Motor that has been thrashed to within an inch of it's life or neglected maintenance is a problem.

But then there are just the bad ones between the bunch, it's a risk I guess.

correct any car that has been badly maintained and missed oil changes is going to be a problem at some point in its life

when the N47 problem first hit the headlines it was high mileage 100k plus cars that often had not had the correct servicing and oil changes, then you started hearing of problems with lower milage correctly maintained cars which is not really acceptable

as i said any failure is not good but i think we are talking a very small percentage of the N47 production run that have given problems

Stratstone is the upmarket arm of Evans Halshaw so I'd avoid like the plague.
Yes, just like Glashütte Original and Omega are upmarket arms of Flik Flak.

If you don't like one, you should definitely avoid the other like the plague.

I know of 5series owners (2011/2012) cars that have been bought off lease with FBMWSH and had the camchain start to rattle within 6 months of purchase.

That is with mostly motorway miles prior to purchase and maintained properly as far as oils changes go.

The simple fact is BMW had to modify the engine, the newer ones still have trouble.

I am sure I read somewhere that there is a new 2.0 diesel lump now.

After owning a 116D for a few months I can't see Inwas impressed with the economy or the refinement.

It did handle nicely and had standard 16" alloys and had been changed over to non run flats with a can of sealant in the boot which greatly improved ride when compared to a 116i that I have driven on 17" wheels and RF's which felt like you were driving on cartwheels.

Interestingly the car had full BMW history which included a Reciept for the Michelin tyres in non RF.

Going by what I have read and been told the 2.0d will give problems not might.

The mileage it happens at may vary.

But in London there are BMW specialists that do a roaring trade in camchains.

Perhaps the stop start urban traffic makes a difference.

But then the 2.0tdci lump as fitted to Fords, Citroens, Pugs and Volvos seems to manage just fine with London traffic as does the 2.2 Merc lump.

The reasons for a Camchain are long life.

Well the 2.0tdci has a 150k mile lifespan and the 3.0 tdv6 engine in Jags/Land Rovers/Range Rovers and PSA vehicles had a 112k mile lifespan.

And I know that in my case you can run the 2.0tdci a long way past 150k.

I am beginning to think camchains are too problematic.

The Vauxhall 2.2 petrol lump had issues, the 2.5dci Nissan had problems (later one with simplex chain) as did the 1.0 Vauxhall engine and Micras.

My pathfinder never gave any problems with the Camchain but it was serviced well, full Nissan before purchase then given two oil and filter changes a year by me.

Was in nearly 150k when sold.

Perhaps longer service intervals are the problem?

Though, again, BMW would not have modified the engine if there wasn't an issue and they also wouldn't have brought out a new engine as somebody has stated earlier.

A BMW is not really the same with a four cylinder lump anyway.

Why isn't a BMW the same with a 4 cylinder lump may I ask?

Have you driven a BMW with a 6 cylinder engine?

If you need to ask that question then I suspect you haven't.

Now that BMW have started to make FWD cars it also means that there is a possibility that in a few decades time there will be a post stating "A BMW is not really the same with FWD anyway"

With the answer "Why isn't a BMW the same with FWD?"

    My reply would be

"Have you driven a RWD BMW"

"If you need to ask that question I suspect you haven't"

Notchy manual gearboxes, tail happy handling on the older stuff and the odd reliability issue with the diesels not withstanding BMWs have always had excellent handling balance.

The nicest ones always used to have silky smooth six cylinder engines.
