  • When I worked on Crisis Loans for the DWP, the amount of wallets and purses that were lost every day would cover the streets of the UK.....funnily enough though I have never in my life come across a "dropped" purse or wallet.

It was also funny how everyone always took every penny of their money out in cash rather than taking out what they need, even when they have a bank account and debit card.

Not that I am accusing the OP of anything, of course.

Even worse now that they can get a welfare payment that they don't even have to pay back. If memory serves me right .. I think a couple can claim 6 times a year.

I sat through an amusing conversation once in A&E waiting room....A middle aged couple trying to decide which was the most convincing story to tell them and the fastest way to get it, they then sat and searched through the Duty Free web page for Manchester Airport to work out how much they needed for a 1000 cigs on their way to Turkey the next week..... Very comical..

Imagine the duty on bringing them back though.....

Turkey isn't EU, so as a couple the maximum they can bring back is 400......

I'm assuming they planned on smoking them while they were there?

    No idea.

I know a lot of people think 'oh, it's in Europe, so we can bring back as many as we like' though.

OH flew an Istanbul the other week and said that a number of people got on board with more than the 200. Don't know how many got stopped coming back in, as she uses a different checkpoint to pax.

  • OP I hope you can manage ok.., I know its a blow when this kind of money disappears, especially as its DLA for your child, this tends to make you feel doubly guilty. But its the sort of thing that can happen to anyone. One moment of not paying attention or being distracted, and its gone.

Give your daughter extra hugs.., she won't know the money's gone missing even if you have to cut back a bit. Just prioritise what you have to pay out, and what can wait.

I'm afraid you won't be able to get the money paid out again.

Just because you haven't come across a 'dropped' purse or wallet doesn't mean that people don't drop them.

Like lukieboy96 I found a purse and the owner also bought me a big bunch of flowers.

So there are honest people and there are people who lose purses and wallets.
