Lost purse with benefits in

Hi everyone,
Yesterday I paid in Co-op, and had £150 cash of my daughter's DLA in a seoerate cash purse to keep it separate from my own money. Between coop and the 10 minute walk home, It must have fallen from my bag as its vanished. I'm absolutely devastated! Called police, co-op, and not sure what to do now. Waiting for tax credits claim at the moment but in the mean time that was all I had for myself, partner and two young children. Would there be any Chance of getting it reimbursed? I am more than aware this is a 'suspect' time for this to happen but we genuinely have no money until late next week. Thank you

To answer specifically - no, you won't get it reimbursed.

The best you can hope for is to keep calling the police and Co op to see if anyone has handed it in.

As regards having no money until next week -
any friends/family who can help out?
    small overdraft from bank
    credit card?

If you are totally desperate then the only thing you need to worry about is food. Everything else can wait. Just contact everyone who will be expecting money, explain the circumstances and ask for time to pay. Since it's only a week nothing awful will happen.

Food parcels can be obtained with a referral from CAB.

If someone you had paid had lost the money you gave them, would you be happy to pay them again so they weren't out of pocket ?. I doubt it. Same principle applies here.

  • Aww OP I feel for you, I once lost my purse with around £180 in it that I'd taken out to pay rent. I hadn't much left and it took a while to catch up financially, it's just one of those horrible life situations :( I very much doubt that you'd get it reimbursed, it's one of those things that everyone would try if you could! Worst time of year to lose all that money, hopefully someone will find it and hand it in to the police.

Have you a St Vincent De Paul branch near you? They are normally good at providing assistance when needed. They probably won't give out cash but might have food hampers, children's toys etc if that would be of any help to you.

No chance of reimbursement. Local councils often have information on food banks etc. That's the only advice I can offer.

Shouldn't you be spending your disabled daughter's DLA on her rather than just lumping it in with the household budget?

Very unlikely. Banks often do refund if stolen as a distraction theft at an ATM as long as you report it and packaged bank accounts insure for cash; but, I doubt the Co-op would, unless as a gesture of goodwill at Christmas.
Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.

I do agree with missbiggles. Surely, this payment is intended to address the additional expenses your daughter's disabilty imposes upon her. If you are her 'appointee' I'm sure the fact that this money doesn't actually belong to you has been explained.

Why on earth would the CO-OP offer a gesture of goodwill? She failed to secure the purse and says she lost it between the shop and home, it's nothing to do with them.

OP can your husband ask for an advancement of his pay, assuming he's employed?

If you put your Daughters DLA in a different purse to keep it separate from your money what happened to your own money?
