Once you've upgraded the RAM, you can reinstall XP and/or flash this updated BIOS. Instructions here and then install Windows 7 using the Windows 7 32 bit re-installation disc that you utilised earlier.
    Once complete, look here

Oohh... thanks Nifty, will have a looksee when I get home :)

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

Indeed, it's within the original instructions. Dependent on your level of confidence, you can go the bootable USB drive or simply install using an up to date XP with SP3 image and run as admin from there.

thanks guys, looks like it'll be easiest to just reinstate the xp image and update from there... think I've tracked down a gig stick of RAM to pop into the box, running 7 on 1.25Gb will suffice (with a few tweaks, of course ;) ). This box won't boot from a USB..

Looks like the project's back on :)

learning more linux may have to wait......

Actually the easiest may have been to run it from a Floppy. Either way, it matters not. I'm sure that you aren't in a hurry.

Hmmm.... beginning to think this is cursed :p

Model check - the dell is a SX260, so BIOS version A03 is most current... no probs.

XP image was corrupted when I went to re-instate it, so had to go back to a clean install, updated BIOS to A03 no probs, but still no USB boot capability :( now to find the RAM.....

dcm - bah! humbug.... however, once W7 is on the box, I'll be taking an image and then re-trying linux.... I've only got about 10 distros ready on dvds to try again, and with the extra RAM I'll be adding kobibuntu to the list :p

You are going to try a mere ten Linux distros? When there are hundreds and hundreds available?

    I call "insufficient dedication"! :)
