Guys'n'Gals,
got a little problem with a Lubuntu installation....can anyone help?
So, Lubuntu is installed as the only OS on an old dell optiplex "lunchbox" SFF PC, to be used for streaming to the main tv via vga and audio cable.
I set it up using a normal monitor, set the screen res for 1024x768 as this is the max the tv will display, applied and saved the setting.
So, I plug back into the tv, all good so far, then after a reboot Lubuntu resets the res to 1280x1024 or higher, so it won't display on the tv  I then have to plug back into the monitor to alter the res, back into the tv, all is well.......
...until the next reboot
Is there any way to ensure the screen res IS actually saved??

Surely not the best for a media centre is it?Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hmmm, wondering if it's a dodgy edid descriptor table in the TV. From that resolution is it an old model ?
What's the GPU, Intel IGP ?
You might have to make a forced custom resolution in Xorg.conf but I think that might be depreciated now, long time since I had to do it.
Edit,
If you get it working check the EDID to see if that is the source of the issue:

the tv is 7-ish years old, no probs when I had XP on the dell box, set screen res and there it stayed, no probs, as you would expect. I'm still a linux novice, but this just seems to be a nonsensical situation after Windows... between this and Flash on various distros, I'm getting a bit aarrgghh!! about it all......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

will have to have a close look at this. The amount of streaming we do on the main tv is very small, so thought dell box + linux + XBMC/kobi would suffice....if I could get the damn thing to work properly. I might go back to Puppy and faff about with Flash instead..........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

Kodibuntu? Or get a Raspberry Pi ?
Newest pi is a quad core cpu and costs approx £30. Getting one and going to use openelec with Kodi and see if its any better than having a big PC doing all the work.
I did think if outting Mint on my mums computer, thinking she probably wont notice, but then i needed to add a different driver and thought nope she wont be able to do that.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

From memory there are three ways to set resolution: the GUI method, which I'm guessing you did originally, the xrandr method and the xorg.conf method.
I would try all of them before giving up on it.
Certainly on Debian you can still use xorg.conf, but you can get away with a partial one, in this case just using the Monitor section. If you google it you'll find lots of examples of the syntax to use.0 -
If memory serves me correctly, with Lubuntu setting the screen resolution required two mouse clicks.
The first actually changes the resolution but there is another button to click to actually 'save' the setting. This is easy to miss and I'm sure this caught me out in the past.
Apologies if I have got this wrong as it was some time ago when I did it.0 -

virgo - yes, I did appy then Save, but it appears it's a known issue that it doesn't...
dcm - I've been through that many distros this weekend, I can't remember if it's using Grub or not :rotfl: actually, think it is, even though Lubuntu is the only thing on the hdd. Question - if it was set in grub, would Lubuntu just override that as it was loading?......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
