If ND is indeed correct (and he usually is) it seems like Android must be susceptible to "drive by" malware just like Windows.

I don't think other Android platforms have a "safe mode" at least I've never come across it but all will have a recovery mode and as was already said several times that is usually accessed by powering up the phone while holding volume down. Navigate the options with volume buttons. I'd always try clear cache first then if that doesn't sort it go for the restore to defaults.

It's likely he isn't and is know to make errors, the classic MO for ransomware on android is installation from unknown sources or have phone root. Malware has got into the Google Playstore however currently it's not ransomware but banking trojans which are the major threat. I'll remain sceptical until hard evidence is presented to the contrary.

Well you have gone right down in my opinion now for that fantastic post.

The facts are what you have written in that when YOU got hold of the device, the option wasn't ticked.
That doesn't change the ACTUAL TECHNICAL FACT, that had this option not been unticked at some point, this crapware wouldn't have got on the device ..

I can only provide factual technical advice - I connot however advise if you didn't have your glasses on, or if your brother was lying to you/forgot etc etc etc ..

My post remains sound - and now you just look like you don't know what your talking about, and have spat your dummy out when published technical facts differ from your own experience.

    How old are you , 10 ?

    .

Android most certainly IS susceptible to drive by attacks - that's right

But only if the option to install from unknown sources is ticked.

What about this is so hard to understand ?
Android is a locked down operating system, core files and services cannot be altered full stop unless the device is rooted the user and UI have no access to override this programmatically.

    sheesh

Yes they do - BUT as your device is rooted, I could write a simple few lines of code into my malware that would un-tick the option automatically.

Because as the device is rooted, the UI, and therefore my code, would have access to the system files that control this.
    effectively re-writing the operating system

That's what rooting the device means - you have access to root

On my rooted android devices you have always had to manually grant root access to a program via SU. If you don't grant it then it won't run and I'm guessing that means your malware too.

If you are using SU then yes, you would need to click allow to grant an app root permissions.
But when I write my malware, it comes bundled with an app you actually want.
And when you grant THAT app root permissions, my payload can do what it likes.

And as your phone is rooted, this is going to be a very bad day for you
