That is precisely the point that should be shouted from the rooftops.  i believe that there are or were certain guidelines that the search engines were or are obliged to go by for making their claims but to a cynic there is usually also an incentive to make their suggestions as attractive as possible.  I suggest that possible switchers invest in a large jar of table salt.

One of the aspects I like about CEC comparisons is that you can set your comparison basis to (1)  year on your current tariff or (2) a year on your supplier's go-to (default) tariff at the end of any fix. No half-way houses. I find option (2) is handy towards the end of a fix as the cost of doing nothing.

Must check that one out! Do CEC comparisons take account of any exit fees if one decides to switch before the end of a fixed term?

I don't think any comparison sites account for exit fees. Whether you have to pay them depends on the end-date of your contract and the switch date. It's a simple matter, though, to deduct exit fees from quoted savings.
In my experience, CEC estimated costs and savings are consistent with my spreadsheet results; though I always check to make sure.

I'm currently on 'simple and superfixed' till Feb 21 and was wondering whether to swap to 'superglow' but the increase in standing charges put me off BUT I think I'm missing a trick here. After reading quite a few threads regarding standing charges and high usage I'm wondering if I would be better on a lower tariff with higher standing charges, my current usage is 21000 gas and 4100 electric, I'm even thinking of going separate suppliers, any thoughts?

If you switched to Simple&Superglow via Avro’s website today you’ll be able to delay the switch so that it commences on 16.9.2020 , if you so wish. Avro allow you to postpone the switch by up to 45 days.

Your new Simple&Superglow would then run until 16.9.2021;... albeit on a tariff that will cost you £11/yr more than Simple&Superfixed given your usage figures.

If your usage figures for gas and leccy don’t vary much year on year (mine have been remarkably consistent) then the ‘Standing charge’ vs. ‘KWh cost’ is not so important. It’s the bottom line that really matters.

However, If you do expect your gas/leccy usage to vary (for whatever reason) then other cost factors need to be considered;...it’s an interesting discussion point I guess.  :)

I've always wondered what would happen if you delay the switch and the tariff is pulled in the meantime. It sounds as though you'd still keep the tariff, if I've understood your post correctly?

When you switch online Avro send an immediate ‘renewal letter’ by email that states the commencement date of the new tariff.

They are duty bound to honour your new tariff even if said tariff is withdrawn from sale very shortly thereafter.

    That's great to know, thanks.

Thanks for the info, very helpful. I can't see my usage changing although one never knows and I think? my usage is in the 'high usage' bracket so should I swap?

I read on here somewhere (so many threads It's hard to keep up sometimes) that usage of 12000 gas and 3000 electric a lower standing charge is better but anything over that which mine definitely is go for cheapest unit rate, standing charge not as important or have I invented that in my head?

I think Avro are okay for the moment (was with Bulb prior and Bristol energy prior to that) but I'm toying with the idea of separate suppliers, Symbio maybe?? although reviews not stacking up well with them. I'm not new to switching but I know looking a little deeper into switching around can make a big difference, just trying to get my head round the 'standing charge' debate.

Myself I can't see that dogmatically focusing on standing charges is other than a red herring since you are dealing with a trade-off between the two variables. If getting the best deal is important then there is no substitute for putting one's own forecast consumption values into a search engine, and preferably a spreadsheet also, to do the number crunching. I have never gone further than that along the "separate suppliers" route. This may generate additional savings but is it worth the hassle? Leaving one supplier at the end of a contract (and agreeing on who owes whom how much) can be traumatic enough, with two it could double the agony ..
