Housekeeping money to your parents/from your children

I don't think paying housekeeping really teaches financial responsibility but I pay it myself and i think it's only fair that I contribute towards expenses. I only pay £120 a month which we decided was a good amount.
I don't think parents should save it then give it back to them because they should be teaching them to save in the first place and not save money for them.
But I personally like to save my money and hate wasting money and my parents have said to me on a few occasions to stop being so tight with my money and enjoy myself. Which seems to be the opposite of what people are telling their children on here lol.0 -

Back in the 80s I had a mon-fri 9-5 yts office job earning £25-£26 plus worked sat all day in bhs for £2 an hour. Out of my £41 my Mum charged me £8. A year on and my yts kept me on. My full time wage was to be £43 so I gave notice on my sat job. On telling my Mum she put my housekeeping upto £10, leaving me with no extra money, just an additional day off. That was the last time I ever told her of pay rises.0

Not at all.. I tell mine they pay their way, sort their bills, and what is left is for the fun things... but mum, I only have £15 left... well you best plan your spending wisely, what do you need? .. Before what do you want??
They can spend it on whatever they like but I will not give loans for 'fun things'
I sound like a right cow.. I'm really not at all.. I wouldn't ever see them go without but I will not give them money to drink or smoke or the like but I won't ever see them in need.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -
I would never charge if they just had a Saturday job while at college or school. Maybe later on if they were earning a lot and working full-time. It would depend on the child really. Obviously if they were treating the place like a hotel, expecting their washing done and to be fed, etc when they're well into their 20s.. then yes, probably time to start charging rent/board.
But if they were sensible and saving their money and I didn't need to charge them, then I wouldn't.left the forum due to trolling/other nonsense

A bit went on clothing, petrol and the phenomenon that was Tesco - alas, the naivity of youth! - but that was really about it when it came to spends.
Looking back, I don't understand why I didn't have a larger deposit for my home.Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

When DS was on his year placement mid-course he earned £8500, so we charged him £25 a week and he was expected to do the same number of chores as other members of the family, namely OH and I.
I did all the washing and ironing, OH cooked do DS did the lawns.
He also took over my car, so he had it cushy really.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

I still love with my parents and have never paid a penny towards housekeeping. My parents take the view that I need to save as much money as possible to put towards to deposit on a house in years to come.0

My dad never charged me, husband was living with his gran when I met him, and their agreement was he paid for all the food shopping and she paid the utilities (her mortgage was long since paid off). She was in her 80s so many of the bills were exempt or heavily reduced.0

If they are the sort of person who spends every penny of their wages on the latest fashion what-ever, the generosity of the parents by not charging board won't do the child any good at all.0
