Watch out! Replacement tumble dryers are also at risk!

This was the article on ITV.com - Replacement Tumble Dryer catches Fire

Does anyone know if the replacement dryers are new or refurbished? Judging by the article above, could it be they are giving out previously used ones that haven't been fixed properly?

My dryer is over a year old, but has hardly been used in that time (best way to cut down on running costs!) so I'd be very annoyed if they took it away and gave me one that had potentially been used extensively by someone else.

I was worried about that too as mines just 2 yrs old and I've looked after it, I'm not accepting a refurb. Someone else said in the thread theirs was refurbished, good to know you've had a new one gunnie.

    I still haven't heard a thing.

I rang the Hotpoint customer services yesterday to find out when i should expect someone to contact me as i registered at the end of November and still hadn't heard anything.

I was told by the adviser that because of the amount of calls they had received, they were training up extra engineers as quickly as possible and that the current waiting time to be contacted was 8 weeks from the date you first registered your details. The email notification i received said it would be 5 weeks in November.

My tumble dryer is 9 years old and has been well looked after. I hope i can get a new one like what some people have had!.

My replacement was a new one ,
Got all the registration forms to fill in,
Packaging was intact and well padded
    No marks,scratches or anything else
    Nice and shiny brand new

Mine was an old one so well impressed getting a new one as I didn't expect that at all
  • Thought I would share my story / experience of the recall / modification of these dryers.

I completed the form online on 23rd November. I had to complete two forms one for myself and one for my parents whose dryer was affected also.

I was called last week about my parents dryer, they had an Indesit IDC 85 (UK) a condenser dryer which was purchased in the summer of 2013. Indesit called on 30th December to say it needed replacing and they were offering a Whirlpool AZB8570. We accepted that, because to be honest a new dryer is better than a repair, and in my parents house it does not get used very much. I was then advised someone would call shortly to arrange delivery. They called the next day 31st December and delivered was arranged for 6th January.

Delivery was smooth, confirmation text day before confirming delivery date, followed by a text later that day giving us a 3-hour delivery slot. Finally day of delivery another text confirming 1-hour delivery slot. Delivery person was friendly and helpful, removed old dryer and installed new one, unpacked and removed packing, tested dryer was working. I was chatting to delivery guy who was making approx. 30 deliveries a day for replacement machines. He told me all the old ones were being scrapped and because Hotpoint / Indesit etc. are part American owned, it was the American's who wanted new dryers to be delivered to avoid possible law suits!

He told me if I had not heard anything about my replacement (also reported 23rd November) then to chase it up next week. I have a Hotpoint Vented Dryer TVM562G. I bought mine in May 2010. I did chase up with Hotpoint before Christmas and was told to allow 8 weeks for them to contact me. My initial email confirmation of the form filling did not give any specific time (although aware some people's emails advised 5 weeks) The delivery driver said it would more than likely be a replacement dryer as hardly any were being modified. He told me, he even replaced a dryer yesterday that was 12 years old!

I should add within 30 minutes of registering the new warranty online with Whirlpool, I got a sales call trying to plug the extended warranty.
  • Initially they were offering a condensing dryer.

Now when you click the link it is a vented one.

I called to enquire as the vented is no use for where I live, it has to be a condenser. Only option they said is to keep watching the link for any changes. She says they are out of stock, but the person I spoke to before her said they were in stock

Like others on here I registered my Hotpoint Tumble Dryer on 23rd November 2015. I did my own and another relatives who also had an affected Tumble Dryer.

They have since been contacted and received a replacement at the beginning of January, whilst I am still waiting.

Yesterday I got a letter, sent on the basis I 'Probably owned a Hotpoint Tumble Dryer' and to check to see if it was affected.

Earlier today I sent a snail-mail letter to Customer Services at Hotpoint (Whirlpool Head Office) to chase up what was happening, since it was approaching 8 weeks since I registered.

Having now posted that, I have received an email this morning from Hotpoint, about my registration on 23rd November 2015 and it says:

"Thank you for recently registering your tumble dryer to be modified to improve its safety and quality performance. We are writing to inform you that we are experiencing delays in scheduling the free of charge modifications. While we cannot provide a definite revised modification date at this time, we are making every effort to have your tumble dryer scheduled for modification as soon as possible. This delay does not meet our quality and service standards, we apologise for this inconvenience and we thank you for your patience.

The safety of our customers is our number one priority. Every customer matters to us. Therefore, the necessary modifications will be made on the first-registered, first-served basis."

Clearly Hotpoint do not do these modifications on a first registered, first served basis, since I completed my online form some 20 minutes before I did the one for my relative, so Hotpoint are telling porky pies!

When I click the link in the email, it confirms the date and time registered and offers me a Hotpoint 7kg Tumble Dryer for £59, which I am not going for, since I shall hold out and see if they replace my other for free, as they did for my relative.

£5 or £59 I do not see why I should fork out for a new dryer when the fault lies with Hotpoint!

Registered on 25th November and haven't heard anything yet apart from the automatic emails confirming the registration when we did it. Long past the 5 week timescale outlined in the email.
