    Oh I see.

In the same way that owning two cars would double the chances of getting killed in a car crash.

Or to get back on topic - owning two tumble dryers would double the risk of having a tumble dryer fire.

Statistics - we can make them say what we want, can't we. ;)

Not at all, owning two cars would make no difference, because you can only be on the road with one.

But if you had two tumble driers you could easily use both at once and this would certainly double your risk of a tumble drier fire.

The bottom line is that Hotpoint made an inferior product for 11 years.

Extremely helpful and informative post. I am amazed at some of the laid back comments on here regarding fires and a strange kind of misplaced loyalty to Hotpoint.

Or perhaps rather than having any sort of loyalty, we're just realists?

ie if there have been 6000 fires and only 750 of them caused by hotpoint/indesit etc machines, that means their machines are accountable for 12.5% of such fires and its not isolated to their brand alone (and I would wonder what % of tumble dryers sold are hotpoint, if higher than 12.5% then the risk is lower with a hotpoint machine than another brand).

Likewise, practically every appliance in your house carries a risk with it. Look at deep fat fryers - apparently responsible for 20% of all house fires. Cooking appliances in general are responsible for half of all fires in the home. There are around 40,000 fires in dwellings each year, that means 8,000 a year occur due to deep fat fryers and a further 12,000 occur due to other cooking appliances.

That is per year. The 750 quoted for hotpoint machines is over 11 years and the 6000 figure quoted for all tumble dryers is over 11 years. That means there are 68 fires per year due to hotpoint machines and yet people are doing a chicken little over it. Puts it into perspective, don't you think?

That means to me that the 68 fires caused by Hotpoint had the potential to kill 68 families.

Personally I'd never leave a house unattended with appliances like this in use. But lots of people do especially as they have the delayed start feature.

Out of those 750 fires, only 3 resulted in injury - no deaths. That is 0.25 injuries per year and 249 out of 250 fires result in no injury to persons.

ETA: 20 people die or are injured every day as a result of fires in a home. And you think 0.25 per year is the big bad?

I'm not questioning these statistics but what is your source?

That's why I said potential to kill. A house fire is a terrible thing anyway but imagine how you'd feel when your insurance fails to pay out.

    I'd feel pretty disappointed.

The suggestion that insurance companies will not pay out in these situations has been made several times on this thread.

I'll challenge it once again - do you have any indication that home insurers will not pay out if one of these tumble dryers causes a fire?

Insurance companies will find any excuse.

Thanks Glentoran, Zandoni pointed that out to me eight posts ago. Well done. ;)
